Review: Han Solo in Carbonite key chain

Posted by ,

5006363 Han Solo Carbonite Metal Keychain is currently the gift with purchase with qualifying Star Wars orders at LEGO.com.

There were complaints when it was revealed a few days ago but I'm not sure why because, now I have it in hand, I can tell you that it's awesome and something that every LEGO Star Wars fan will want.

It's packed in an attractive sturdy lift-top box, about 11cm by 5.

The keychain itself is pushed into a close-fitting foam insert.

It's apparent as soon as you see it that this is a high quality item. I'm not sure what it's cast from because it's not magnetic and seems too heavy to be aluminium. Sorry that my metallurgy skills are not up to scratch...

In fact, it's surprisingly heavy: about 60g.That's perhaps because I am used to handling LEGO things made of plastic!

It's coated in a clear protective lacquer and the chain and keyring have a 'distressed' look. To some extent they cheapen the look of the overall item and I'd have preferred them to be nice and shiny like those on normal LEGO key chains.

The back is just as cool as the front!

Overall this has exceeded my expectations, perhaps because it's not until you have it in hand and can appreciate its heft and finely cast features that its quality becomes apparent.

I have just two complaints: It's not actually made from carbonite and it's far too good to use as a key chain: dangling against metal keys would ruin it. It's best displayed in its opened box which is what I'll be doing.

It's available now (while stock lasts) at LEGO.com with Star Wars purchases exceeding £100/$100/€100. Several other GWPs are available as well at the moment so now's a great time to place an order.

Thanks to LEGO for sending this item for review. All opinions expressed are my own.

So it goes into that category of key chains that are too good to use. Pity, but damn does it look good.

By in United States,

I'd really love to have this, but having just bought a house, money is a bit too tight to consider making an order right now.

Maybe its after market price won't be terribly expensive.

Noticed the same thing...

I liked that it looks solid. The China aspect cheapens it massively...

Gravatar
By in Denmark,

Non-magnetic Stainless Steel, perhaps? We have a great amount of that where I work, and putting size into consideration, it sounds to be made of just that.

The super-exclusive iPhone is also assembled in China, and designed in California. I suppose something similar will happen here... ;-)
I like it. Just waiting for the order.

If a keychain is too good to use as a keychain, then what's the point?

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Yes, I'm sore about not being able to get this, so I'm forcing myself to come up with ways to dislike it. So far I have:

a) wonky arms (are his shoulder joints at hip level?)
b) old-style hair (dunno, some other guy said it, so it counts as far as I'm concerned)
c) the pose and facial expression just scream 'disco ecstasy' to me (look at that hip-thrust and think 'lost in music')

I'm definitely starting to feel better about not getting this... honestly...

Isn't just about everything made in China these days?

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I like it. It's a nice substantial piece of memorabilia. Would have been cool if they updated the hair though. I would assume they had to make a new mould anyway. That would have set it apart from the plastic version and added to the exclusivity.

Is it in the brand stores?

Gravatar

It's a shame that they couldn't be bothered to update it with Han's current hair piece.

Shame, because what better way to decorate a new house than with new Lego? After all, it wasn't new, but the first set I built when I moved into my apartment was 7194.

Lego promos should be a Lego set, polybag, or minifigure. Not an unusable keychain, useless tote bag, wrapping paper, etc. just my opinion. Especially when I’m spending $100 or $200. $20-30; fine, give me a keychain.

Hahaha

I imagine this always intended for may the 4th but was just COVID delayed.

Zamac? AKA, the stuff most toy cars are made out of. It's mostly zinc, but also has aluminum in it as well.

Looks good, but well, it isn't exactly "LEGO" enough to me.

I don't get half the stuff that is made into keychains. A lot of it is just something they've slapped a keychain on it that shouldn't be. You see a lot of very small models of heavy equipment and farm machinery that has been made into keychains, usually with rolling wheels; and sometimes, even moving parts. The paint will chip/wear, and parts will break off. So, pretty dumb to have those on keychains. I collect those; but I usually get out the linesman's pliers and cut off the keychains. And then, there's the people taking Matchbox and Hot Wheels cars and making them into keychains and even jewlery. My keys are heavy enough without a 3-inch long, 3 ounce model car hanging off them.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

Heavy keychains suck.
That thing would pull your pants down if you had that on your keys in your pocket.

I mean... if you have a way to change the global economy and deflate China's dominance in the manufacturing sector, feel free to say it. We'd all love to hear your magic bullet fix to solving it. :P

I have some friends who work in manufacturing for the model railroad industry, and without sharing specifics its a complicated issue that ultimately ends up with China as the most competitive cost wise. I've had the chance to inspect some of their tooling in person, and the same tooling they would use in China is the same tooling they would use anywhere else in the world if they had the chance to chose an alternate production site. I highly appreciate that while China is a part of Lego's supply chain they have the factories in Mexico, Denmark, Czech Republic and Hungary too (I hear rumors they have a plant opening in Canada too, did I hear that right?). I think Lego does a good job at spreading out their manufacturing wherever possible, avoiding a Chinese dominance.

Yes there is a lot of political and human rights problems around China's government that I worry about, and that kind of political discussion does not belong in a Lego forum, so I'll just leave it at that.

Gravatar

It looks nice, but I don't like that it has a key chain (which you cannot take away) and that it is made in China...

I think for OP, it's the perception that China = low quality. Which is a view that is becoming more and more dated.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Carbonite is non-magnetic. Just saying....

Wondering since it says "VIP", was this originally intended to be something similar to the Falcon Black Card? Although the Mustang keychain has the separate "VIP" tag.

Gravatar

ha great review, glad i was weak and placed an order this morning!

Gravatar
By in France,

Made in China... as much as 90% of the products we purchase nowadays. It's more than urgent to reequilibrate crafting around the world.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Would a made in Mexico or Canada label make the keychain higher in quality? Does everything has to be made in Europe to be premium? In my opinion, this keychain is a beautifully crafted piece irrelevant to its place of manufacture.

Gravatar
By in Belgium,

Always amuses me that Brickset's stance against "tat" goes out of the window when there's a freebie to review! As keyrings go it's nice. But it's not Lego.

Gravatar
By in Belgium,

Where did people expect this to be made if not China?

Gravatar
By in United States,

I went to the LEGO store today and bought a Razorcrest for my daughter's sixth birthday next month and was happy to receive this keychain and the stunt cannon GWP. The keychain is impressively hefty and the fancy box was a pleasant surprise. I wouldn't have spent $100 just to get the keychain but it was a nice bonus, and I'm grateful that LEGO is a cool enough company to even do GWP in the first place.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Great review that has not frozen my expectations at all. Good call on not using this with keys, since he is no good to me dead. I think your idea of display in the box is great, that way he will not be permanently damaged.

All that’s left now is to wait til he arrives so I can evaluate my display and then...put him in!

Sorry, I phrased that wrong. I meant that the mold the keychain is based on is inaccurate, not the keychain itself.

By in Australia,

Wow so many complaints: They didn’t update the hair. It’s too heavy. It’s too nice. His arms are wonky. It’s made in China.

Jeez guys, it’s a freebie. Give it a break will you?

Gravatar
By in Germany,

It's just a cheap zinc-aluminum diecast keychain in a black cardboard box from the same Chinese factory in Zhongshan that made the previous Mustang keychain. Something like this costs 5$ on Aliexpress. So don't expect that just because there is a LEGO logo on it and it's heavy, that it must be high quality.
In the marketing photos it looked more silver/polished and I thought it would be steel cast. Seeing this review now, I regret spending the money to get this cheap GWP, instead of waiting for a good Black Friday deal.
As others said, I would rather like to see a continuation of the SW minifigures with display stands or the dioramas, instead of unusable things that aren't even brick-built.

Gravatar

Obviously they are talking about DJ, R3-M2, Han Solo mudtrooper, Kessel mine worker & scarif stormtrooper. ;)

By in United States,

@The_Brickster_:
That was the 20th Anniversary line for the LEGO Star Wars theme. Besides all the other terrible things that have already happened (or will happen) this year, January 1st also spelled the end of any 20th Anniversary promos. And there were six minifigs. Obi-Wan was available as a polybag.

@Classique:
Whatever it's made of, it looks like they added a clear sealer

@FARLANDER:
Are you saying this will quickly become the most hacked keychain on the planet?!?!?!?

@Judgeguy:
It's considerably smaller than the plastic version. Where the plastic version can fit a whole Han Solo minifig inside, this is a solid block of metal (and looks like it might fit inside the plastic carbonite slab if those pesky handles weren't in the way). This has a D-ring formed in above his head for the keychain bits to attach to, where the plastic version has handles mounted to either end. And this comes in a fancy box. I mean, there's really no way you're going to look at these and get them mixed up, but changing the hairstyle just because you can would be like painting an exact replica of a dollar bill and giving George a spiked mohawk.

@Vanvonfull:
Unlikely. Besides the usual copyright date, there's a MO/YR date embossed into the back, which is most likely the date of manufacture. It's 07/20, which is over four months too late once you factor in the time required to deliver these to brick-n-mortar stores before the promo starts.

@cody6268:
This doesn't really look like the bare metal used for stuff like Hot Wheels cars. And I hang my keys off my keychain rather than the other way around. My keychain is a ship's anchor. I can put them in my pocket and hook one of the flukes over the top edge. It keeps them from bunching up in a wad of metal in the bottom of the pocket, which makes me chuckle every time I see someone land on their keys, or hip-check their keys into something large and immobile.

@xboxtravis7992:
In the movie Aliens, one of the Marines suggests an effective method. I mean, it'd pretty much start WWIII if anyone tried it, but...

But seriously, the Chinese thing. I once read that Chinese labor costs are 1/4 of those in the US, which is why Chinese manufacturing is profitable. But once those labor costs rise to 1/3 of the US equivalent, it's pretty much a wash. They peg their currency to the USD, which allows them to make sure that the wage gap is never closed. But that's how things work between China and the US. The LEGO Company once looked into moving large amounts of production to China (Clikits was a test subject), and what they ultimately determined was that Europe was still too big a chunk of their market. Transportation costs were significantly higher for them than they would be for a company in the US, and again it was cheaper to shift that sort of production to Hungary and the Czech Republic where the cost of living is considerably slower than in Denmark.

@brick_mason:
I drove to my local store after work and got the keychain, a second cannon, and a second robots. And a further bit of luck, I spotted the Gingerbread House on the shelves even though LEGO.com was still telling me it was out of stock there.

Gravatar

It looks really nice, I'd gladly use one as a keychain. But there are very few interesting SW sets right now at that price point... If 501st Legion was in stock it'd be a good time for army building, but heh... Might end up cheaper to buy one second hand.

Gravatar

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

^ I should have stood one next to it. The embedded minifig is about 80% the size of a real minifig.

Gravatar
By in United States,

^ That’s simply an unfortunate side effect of Carbonite bonding. As I understand it, that reduction also put a heck of a strain on Han’s relationship with Leia and may have unfortunately played a role in their eventual separation.

Or maybe Huw just thinks it’s cool. I personally think it’s excellent and will be getting one. Just because an opinion is different from yours doesn’t mean there’s an ulterior motive behind it

Gravatar
By in United States,

@Nytmare:
It's a keychain. The chain part is pretty low-tech. It has five links, plus the keyring itself. Two of the links are circles, and two are loops with a half twist so they'll lie flat. All six of these rings are technically "broken" since none of them are welded, brazed, soldered, or formed in a complete circle. The five smaller rings are just formed from wire that's bent into shape, and the two ends are lined up with each other without actually connecting.

Yes, this does mean that the keychain can break free from the keyring if enough force is applied. I've had it happen to my anchor keychain several times, but I also know how to reclose the opened link when that happens. In my case, the offending link is made of a soft enough metal that it's fairly easy to damage (and fairly easy to fix). I'd replace it, but the keychain itself has a thick brass loop, which I don't want to damage.

For this keychain, the circular links are probably also the weakest point in the design. You'll have the same problem I did, which is that the keychain attaches to a fairly thick D-ring formed into the top of the carbonite block. If you want to replace it or upgrade it, I'd talk to a professional jeweler to see if there are better options.

Honestly, though, I don't know that's it's that big a concern. It's not like you've got a cinder block hanging from your keychain. The weight of it isn't enough that it's going to open up the links and just fall off. The problem I have with my anchor keychain is entirely related to the way I hook one of the flukes over the edge of my pocket when I'm not using the keys. If I sit down in my car before taking my keys out, I can still easily grab onto the anchor and pull them out. If I'm wearing jeans (it has to do with the shape of the top edge of the pocket), and I'm leaning forward a bit too much, the big keyring and the keys on it can get pinched by the top edge of my pocket and I can pull the keychain with enough force to pop open one of the links. If I take them out before getting in the car, or straighten my legs out a little bit, it's never a problem.

I'm surprised people are being so negative about it. It's a free bonus, and for that it's pretty cool. I was already planning on buying the Razor Crest, so this is just an extra fun thing. @Wrecknbuild:
There's some sort of clear protective sealer applied to the whole block. You might be able to get some useful data by density, but if you want to actually test the material itself you'll have to damage it.

@fredbob392:
Sometimes. I mean, some GWPs end up being worth at least as much as the minimum spend. The Martian Manhunter polybag sold out insanely fast for a minifig with (I think) a $75 target. For something like that, you'd think they would have been a little better prepared. And there was some sort of walker polybag for SW: Clone Wars that sold out even faster, but at least that resurfaced at some point later on. And I don't think it had any exclusive elements.

By in United States,

Got mine today, pretty excited through the whole process. I purchased the Final Duel and a Stormtrooper key chain to bridge the difference for a hundred bucks. My 5 year old daughter and I have been eyeballing that set as soon as it came out and frankly I’m not sure it’ll make it as a X-Mas present. I think the keychain is pretty rad. I love the heft.
The only (extremely minuscule) problem I have with it is it’s ever-so-slightly smaller than a minifigure. Other than that, super stoked for the item.

Fingers crossed I can make it to X-Mas with the Final Duel. She shows me on the catalog basically every day.
