Alpha Team went a bit off piste near the end there, didn’t it?

I like launching my scorpion orbs at people too. Just first tell me one thing.

What in the world is a scorpion orb.

Man you almost miss that little glider thing in the corner! Just wanna say that scorpion needs to practice it’s aim it totally missed. Then again when do missiles on box art really ever hit their mark am I right.

By in Puerto Rico,

I have this set and I love it, it's currently on storage but I still like it now, how did Alpha Team ended again?

I remember this set had an error in some catalogs where it said it included "Ogel" when it actually came with a "Super Ice Drone". I wonder if that change was made somewhere in production or if it was just a typo?

By in United States,

Glad to see it is something other than Bellville or Scala today.

I feel like the genesis of this set was a product designer trying to come up with a System-based model of the Nui-Jaga (from the 2001 BIONICLE line-up), gave up when he or she realized how many BIONICLE parts were already included, and then offered it up to Alpha Team when they realized it fit the bill for the price point. That CG box art, however, isn't doing this set any favors.

By in Australia,

So the final two Alpha Team sets, released this year, were two bad guy vehicle/mecha things?

2005 was just a really awkward time for Lego, wasn't it?

And here I thought Mutant Killer Whale was as weird as Alpha Team got...

That wouldn't be the only time a catalog whiffed on a detail like that. One catalog had an incorrect count of skeleton drones in 4793-1 while another misidentified Pippin Reed as Dr. Kilroy in 7414-1.

The other set, 4770-1, is a good guy vehicle.

Yeah, 2005 was a little awkward, but it was also the first year of City under that name.

By in Singapore,

I entered my Dark Ages just in time to completely miss the second wave of Mission Deep Freeze for at least half a decade. As in, I had no idea these even existed until half a decade later. This is despite having collected many of the first wave sets, with the notable exception of 4748. I still have my Alpha Team collection built up.

Thats a somewhat unimpressive transformation feature its got there. Given other sets in this range could go from, say, a snowmobile to a helicopter this thing just rearing up on its tail isn't particularly stunning

I’d love to see a real scorpion do that. It’d be terrifying.

Move to Australia. You'll see worse.

I saw a crocodile chasing someone on a motorcycle, once. True story.

Wow, I'm really surprised, how come I've never seen this set? Oh wait, I started working and was trying to act like a grown man...

By in United States,

A lot of great sets in that time were strangely packed within cgi enhanced packaging that mostly hid the fun of building and the way the sets actually looked.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Seems like a pretty solid bad guy vehicle-DC Superheroes should take note.

By in United Kingdom,

I never really got into Mission Deep Freeze like I did the previous two Alpha Team lines; perhaps in part because they changed the aesthetic and shuffled the team up so much - and getting rid of Cam, my favourite AT agent, didn't exactly help matters for me either! - so I didn't follow the story beyond playing the online game.

Plus, the UK Lego Magazine at the time left the comic on a forever unresolved cliffhanger, and didn't even mention the second wave of sets (either that, or I missed an issue somewhere), so I've honestly no idea how the later sets actually fit into the rest of the story?

This is peak RSotD: not just showcasing a set unknown to me, but a whole unknown theme.

Dark indeed, were the DarkAges™.

By in United States,

I have a bunch of these Alpha Team sets. I really liked the concept, though it’s a shame it never caught on the way Ninjago has.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I have this one. Just out of my dark age I think. Almost put me back in.

Gravatar
By in United States,

This sets features several recolors for the Bionicle pieces included, and I really like that.

By in United States,

At one point within the last year I recall this commanding prices starting at 60 or 70$ used... boy does the aftermarket turn around fast.

HORROR!!!

By in Netherlands,

This set is underrated. This model is one of the most versatile mechs ever made by lego, and I am glad I managed to track it down!

The scorpion vehicle is actually quite well-designed, although it does depend on the bionicle limbs for its arm and leg builds. However, the thing is quite useable. The claws hold the ice orbs well, and could potentially wield them as weapons (as their touch freezes everything). They can also reach for the carapace, which is a cargo hold for two ice orbs. The tail is very segmented and can even rotate at the base. And the launcher itself also holds an orb, and using a rubber band it can fling orbs very far.

The legs are designed to only go side-to-side, rotate, or move down. They can easily hold the weight of the mech, so in scorpion mode it can easily stand.

Its alternative mode sees the legs folded over the body and the 'head' move forward (which can move up and down and rotate). Now it looks like a two-armed snake! One thing I liked to do is to take of the leg assemblies and put them on the arms to create long fingers for each hand.

Fun fact: the super ice drone differs from the box to the actual set. On the box it has the standard red hands and red leg and hip piece. However, in the set and in the instructions it has black legs and black hands. This was a problem that happened with a few sets in 2005-6. One other I know of was the differing Peter Pettigrew head, missing couldron and different colours of cloth pieces in 4766 Graveyard Duel, and the differences with Katara in 3829 Fire Nation Ship.

By in United States,

I have many fond memories of getting, building and playing with this set as kid. I think it holds up pretty well too, not too mention that dark shade of red is not super common in sets anymore

Whoa, that sounds like being chased by dogs, or killer bees, or dogs with killer bees in their mouth and when they bark they shoot killer bees at you.

Crocodiles are smarter than you think. I was waiting for a bus once, and there was a guy in a trench-coat next to me ... and it was a crocodile. True story.
