New souvenir magnets to be available soon

Following on from 854011 Eiffel Tower that we reviewed in February, LEGO is set to expand the series of souvenir magnets with the release of 854012 London and 854030 Empire State Building.

At the time of writing they do not appear to be available at LEGO.com but they soon should be, given that you don't need to visit Paris to buy that one.

They are packed attractively and both contain around 25 parts, a sticker sheet, and a 4x4 magnet brick to attach to the back. They are small builds but I think the likeness of the locations they portray has been captured very effectively.

Recognisable miniature facsimiles of The Houses of Parliament, Elizabeth Tower and the London Eye have been packed into a very small space.

My only complaint really is that the colour matching of the stickers is awful and has clearly not been done to the company's usual high standard.

Other than that, they are neat collectables and make much better souvenirs than the usual tat sold in tourist gift shops in the cities.

Like Paris, I suspect they'll cost £8.99 and $9.99.

I wonder why the ESB is marked as 6+ but the London one 8+...

Thanks to LEGO for providing them for review. All opinions expressed are my own.

By in United Kingdom,

Not bad little souvenirs, love the use of the cloud plate for the New York magnet. I am disappointed they use stickers and not printed parts, they can use a print for the New York Lady Liberty Magnet so why not these?

Such fun!

Mah, they look cheap and are kinda ugly, like the cheap and ugly souvenir magnets that are found in big cities, the price should be more £2.99 and $3.99 then £8.99 and $9.99.

By in Finland,

They're neat souvenirs, or at least they would be at like 3 USD, 10 is just an absolute gag

Thank you, Huw, for calling it the Elizabeth tower and not Big Ben!

Soon? I already purchased the London one from Shop @Home on the 31st and have received it already. I am waiting for them to release the NYC one!

I really like these. I feel like if LEGO makes more of 'em you could get a display similar in scope/style to an Architecture one but at a much smaller scale!

By in United States,

The London one has been available on the website since at least mid-May since that’s when I ordered it, but I couldn’t find the Empire State one. Hopefully it’s released soon.

Oh! London and New York! Surprising. Never imagined that LEGO could choose those two cities...

€10 each!! And stickers FFS. Lego, you're taking the proverbial.

$10 for one of those little things?!?!

By in United States,

I bought the London one on lego.com last month. Neat little set, probably a bit overpriced but looks cool

I would love one for Toronto with the CN Tower... but alas..

By in United States,

I can understand $5 for one of these because of the magnet brick... But $10 is way too steep. I'll only get these if I can find them for half off.

Very impressive minimalism stylie

Not really something that I'd buy, but can see them as an interest souvenir. Price is really steep though for them I think. £9 for 27 parts? Yeesh...

Okay, so my misses pointed it out to me as I was typing this, and now I can't unsee it... but does anyone else think that the Empire State magnet image looks well... a little inappropriately shaped?

Price Per Part--awful! Even with the magnets (wonder what I can do with those?) I don't see it. But, the builds are very good, and include some useful printed parts.

By in Australia,

I like the design, but they should be much cheaper ($5 AUD at the most).

Maybe just release the magnet itself and then let people customise it themselves?

I hate to break it to you about those "printed" parts...

There are no prints here, just awful stickers - if those were prints it might be worth the extortionate price.

Oh well then. Pass.

The price does not make sense as Lego also sells 4 of the magnet brick pieces 853915 for £7, i.e. £1.75 each, leaving each of the remaining say 25 Lego pieces at around 30p each, rather than the usual 5p-10p. I'm guessing this is one for tourists visiting the actual stores looking for something after all that queuing. Here's a better idea, use the 4 magnets to display mini-figs from each country, e.g. starting with the Tower Beefeater 5005233 (using a 2x2 plate behind the legs so can lie flat).
