This set and the later Sandcrawlers shows the big strides and improvements Lego has made. I own this version and it's definitely superseded by later versions that use plates for the sides.

Oh wow, that is ... not appealing to look at.

By in United States,

I get why the rectangles are on the sides... but it looks horrible. It’s just unfortunate. Good for its time though.

By in United States,

I remember seeing this and being in disbelief that we were finally getting Jawas. They even introduced the shorter capes to make them work! Now, we've had plenty of opportunities to get them, there was even a battle pack. You could have a clan of Jawas if you wanted it bad enough, but this set will always be special because it was the first.

By in United States,

Today I learned that they released a Sandcrawler in 2005...

By in United States,

I had this! It may be nostalgia talking, but it looks a lot better in person than it does on the box.

The sides look like a 4-color-palette pixel art..

I regret not buying this when it was on the shelf at TRU for a month for only $50. I was in my twilight age. Never had a full dark age.

By in United Kingdom,

I know the use of bigger moulded pieces is generally frowned on...but I really think this set could have used some

I liked this thing when it was released, mostly because I like Jawas. I still haven't taken it apart. It was a really boring build, as I recall. The dimensions were off, as it was wide enough, but not long enough. The cockpit was small, room for just one jawa, and the sticker windows were kind of sad. In the end, it was mostly just a brown shell, as the inside had no detail, but for that "room" that could be removed. However, I think it was a good first attempt at an oversized vehicle that has really odd angles.

Not bad for the time, even if the 2014 one is nearly perfect. On the bright side, It does seem more detailed and generally better than that excuse in 2018.

By in Switzerland,

This is my first set with more than 1500 pieces and a set number 10000 and above, I bought after my dark age.
And one of my first Star Wars, next to dozen of Creator sets
I was a young father and this set was for me and only me.

Not a lot of minifigs, but a lot of droids.
The other Star Wars set i bought was the https://brickset.com/sets/7256-1/Jedi-Starfighter-and-Vulture-Droid

By in Slovenia,

Jawas are one of my favorite SW minifigs and although the newer sandcrawlers are improved versions, they are both inferior on one note - these are the only jawas with capes.. Shame, they look so much better with them..

By in Netherlands,

How nice! I had the bags for this one still sealed for 13 years with instructions and finally opened them two days ago. No minifigs unfortunately. Built half of it. It's a straightforward build so far. I rather like the classic building and the look of this. And I figured it would be a nice looking box to store Lego in :-)

Side panels only a mother could like?

The UCS version (which I bought during an improvised visit at Legoland Carlsbad while on holiday in California) is definitely superior and a joy to see.

By in United Kingdom,

This is so ironic. Yesterday, I was watching Mandrproductions’ sandcrawler comparison video and I thought ‘Hey, my dad has that set!’ So yeah, we’ve got it and it grows on you after a time.

By the way, is mandr on here?

I loved building this set and had it on display for years, its tucked away in a box safely wrapped in bubble wrap just waiting to reappear!

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

Oof, definitely a set that got better as time passed

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I had one of these and agreed to trade it for the UCS one when it came out, such was its value!
Then got ripped off by the trader who turned out never to have had a UCS one anyway.

Good for its time but might have benefited from less accent colours and just more reddish brown.

By in United States,

This is weirdly laid out. The one in the movie is sold brown...where's all those tans come from?

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I've always been fond of the Sand-crawler vehicle - don't have one yet.. noticed there is one in 'The Mandalorian' and the Jawas from that have red eyes. Reason enough for a whole new version!

By in Germany,

Actually a pretty fun set to play with, with tons of useable interior space.

The really interesting thing about it though is how long it was apparently in the works: https://live.staticflickr.com/1739/42817144211_8e068a3aea_k.jpg
Before the first Lego Star Wars sets were even released, they had already built a prototype of this thing, but it took another 6 or 7 years for it to come out.

By in United States,

This set still has a fond place in my heart and mind.

Probably the sand coming off the tracks.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I always wanted this as a kid, and each upgrade has been even better but I still haven't gotten my hands on any of them!

By in Italy,

Jduging by the Prototype Pics, it seems like not much has changed, I guess this was supposed to release somewhere between 1999-2001 (The Design looks ALOT like sets from that era), but they werent confident in something over 100$ selling

By in Canada,

I used to own it, bought new in box, built it, sold it, why?, then bought another one last year to complete my second edition of the Original Trilogy Edition ( I had sold them in my dark age 2014 to 2017 ) Now I will keep them. Nostalgia! As we get older, I am 50, nostalgia takes larger place.
