Let me guess, is this race rigged?

I'm sorry, I can't hear the words "rig" and "race" together without my mind immediately going to trucks that defy the laws of gravity, pretend that walls don't exist, and have some SERIOUSLY strong hyperdrive in the reverse pedal.

By in United Kingdom,

wasn’t this (at least mentioned) in a RSotD?
Edit: just checked, couldn’t find it. wonder where i saw it? perhaps a MaM...

By in Australia,

Too much classic space, right? We had to counter it with some Town Junior.

I hate that they stopped putting doors, on the vehicles ... but at the same time, those printed bricks looked lovely, I'd be lying if I said anything else. There's enough bits and bobs, here, that I feel like this is the bones of a decent set, but not much else.

Tool sprue and a jack, nice parts; but you can get them for peanuts on Bricklink today. I have 10 of the jacks, and I do not know why, I bought them all at once on BL.

This was not a good era for LEGO vehicles. 4 Plus takes this same concept, and makes it even worse. I will have to get that printed wheel balancer brick, however.

And that screwdriver. Always the last part at the bottom of a bin.

I was the right age for this set at the time, so I have fond memories of it! One good thing about this era besides childhood memories: lots of printed pieces (and not a lot of stickers). I've been meaning to add the printed race team pieces from this set as decoration in my city's garage.

The worst part of it is this is a basically a juniorized remake of non-juniorized set 1821 from the previous year. At one point, Lego actually sold the two as a kit (https://i.imgur.com/zXKd0nB.jpg).

By in Turkey,

After so many beautiful sets in 80's and 90's, I always thought juniorization was a wrong move. Now, after seeing 4+ sets today I'm thinking it wasn't the wrong move, it was just missing a step. Maybe Lego shoud have created a Town Jr. sub theme for these sets, and then continue with regular sets as usual.

You’re absolutely right. Lego’s mistake was replacing all their Town/City sets with the 90’s version of 4+, instead of having it as a concurrent line alongside.

@Lego_lord I tend to agree. When 6474 appeared as RSOTD there were quite a few people (myself among them) saying that it was the first set they ever owned. Town Jr. was perfect for those of us just starting out with Lego, but killing off the regular Town line wasn't a good move.

By in New Zealand,

It is quite clear that this is ‘juniorised’ but I would’ve loved this if I was a 5yo at the time. I can imagine a lot of play value with this.

By in Germany,

I was slowly entering my Dark Age at that time. Being 14 and used to more sophisticated town sets even at an early age, the first thought was "they must be joking!". Of all themes, the all so important town was juniorized! And I bet this was the actual start of LEGO's decline that beaked around the tur of the millennium...

I disagree. 4+ is far better designed. It is, however, still not good enough to replace the entire City range. That said, the best of this year's new airports is probably the 4+ model.

Bad vehicles but more tools then a current City set would give.

Yes, after the introduction of the expanded tool kit in the mid '90s I was surprised to a return to the original '70s spanner in more recent sets. Maybe because it's larger?
