Good PPP, even with those large parts. I would have loved this set as a kid.

PPP was way better 10 years ago compared to now. Just look at Green Grocer 2300 pieces for $150, Taj Mahal 5900 pieces for $300, Transport Ferry 1200 pieces for $70.

Even better when LEGO put them on sale to clear out stocks in the US

@vader11 - I think we still have some good PPP nowadays, 70620 Ninjago City with 4800 pieces for usd299,99 ( and a what a selection this one have), the reissue of the Taj Mahal( ok, it's a reissue but still at usd329,99), the Hogwarts Castle with 6020 pieces for usd400, just to name a few of the biggest... In fact, we have nowadays more licensed sets, which are always more expensive, when comparing directly with 2009's inventory. TLG is also a bigger company today, with other markets, other projects/products and probably more costumers, that growth is also reflected on the price tag, the more that you get, the more you want... However, I like to think they strive and struggle to give us the best deals as possible, always!

856 and 8459 (& its re-releases 8439, 8684) are much more playable: While linear actuators in this setup provide strength I have always preferred playability in any front loader. Both the mechanical setup of 856 and the pneumatics in 8459 result in smooth operation.
In contrast, the linear actuators require too many turns of the crank wheel. Also, you always have to switch between raise and tilt of the shovel.
As far as I remember, this set has same functions as the pnematic front loader (8459) at a much bigger scale.

I never liked the linear actuators. I have many iterations of LEGO front loaders and crane trucks, but never bothered getting them if they had linear actuators. Always like pneumatics so much better.

@vader11: yeah but how much would all that be in today’s money?

Yeah...I remember this set well and picked it up for about $40 on clearance when TLG closed it out. It's replacement in 2014 was the Volvo Loader with power functions that retailed for $250 USD. Times have changed...

By in Paraguay,

It is a very efficient model considering the size and included functions at that piece count. Very solid Technic set, it even allowed for motorization.

Eh. 8459/64/39 is still miles better.

Probably my first big technic set. A good one as well, and I'm going to have to be contrary and say tgat I like how it has linear sctuators over pneumatics- they offer more previce control, and are sturdier in any position you want to leave them in.

The B model is a bit weak here though. I did really appreciate all the power functions integration options at the time, now a set either comes motorised, or can't be easily motorised. Obviously making something easily upgradeable comes at a cost, but it made PF feel more like a system. Plus, if you really liked a PF compatible set, it was an instant way to denote that and make it even better.
