Random set of the day: Santa Claus and Sleigh

Today's random set is 1807 Santa Claus and Sleigh, released in 1995. It's one of 21 Town sets produced that year. It contains 17 pieces and 1 minifig, and its retail price was US$2.

Ah, the good old days when LEGO's Santa was just a magical hobo...
When you look at this set, you can see the giant advancements in Minifigure parts, cause now Santa has a special hat for him, as do many new minifigures. But a great set nonetheless

Why did Lego go through a period of dressing Santa in grey trousers? It’s not like red trousers were some rare part at the time.

A possible explanation for the grey trouser might be found the Danish Yule tradition.
The Danish "julenisse" (jul = yule, and "nisse" equals more or less a brownie or hob, a house spirit on the farms). Traditionally their clothes resembled the folk costumes, which normally includeded red knit caps and red and grey jackets and trousers, though other colours might also be used.
"Julenisse" is sometimes used as a synonym for "julemand" (Father Christmas), they might act as helpers for Father Christmas, or they might have a life of their own, often living in the attic of houses.

"Christmas" in Danish is "jul" - the first three letters in "July/juli"
It is no wonder that the annual "World Santa Claus Congress" is being held in Denmark in July ;o)
You know, I've heard that preparations for Christmas keep starting earlier each year, but this might be the earliest yet...
That said... I remember this one! I got it for Christmas in '99... because it had come as a freebie with 5936 Spider's Secret (I was big into the Adventurers theme as a kid, heh) that my parents had bought for me that holiday from the Lego shop website; I suppose it may have been one of the earliest occurrences of an official gift-with-purchase?
The build was so simplistic that I didn't think a whole lot of it at the time... but I was absolutely *fascinated* by that beard piece. I'd never seen it before, and it easily became my favourite part of the set xD

This is just a guess, but maybe at the time they didn't want to print unique parts for these specific seasonal sets, and without a printed-on belt and other details, an all-red Santa outfit would have probably just looked like he was wearing a baby onesy. To avoid this they would have just given him grey pants.
