Review: 70658 Oni Titan

The ninja were scattered during the last season of NINJAGO: Master of Spinjitzu, leaving the four original heroes in the Realm of Oni and Dragons while Lloyd and Nya remained in NINJAGO City, now conquered by Lord Garmadon. The latest wave of sets is therefore similarly divided and features characters from both locations.

70658 Oni Titan is vital to Lord Garmadon's rule over NINJAGO and its organic design caught my attention immediately. Several excellent mechs appeared in The LEGO NINJAGO Movie range and I have been looking forward to this model which appears to share a number of impressive features with its manned predecessors. The price of £44.99 or $49.99 also seems quite reasonable for a set of this size.

Minifigures

Lloyd Garmadon was left behind in NINJAGO City at the end of the last season so appears in just two sets from the Hunted subtheme. This version of the hero is distinguished by a sturdy sashimono fitted to his back while the torso and legs are also found in 70651 Throne Room Showdown. I like the combination of green and dark green as well as the militaristic armour design which includes some battle wear so feels suitable for someone trying to survive in enemy territory.

The ninja are updated for almost every wave of NINJAGO sets and I generally prefer the more colourful designs. Nevertheless, the pearl dark grey attire worn by Nya looks excellent, featuring a few dark azure stripes and the Wu Cru emblem on her chest. The legs are similarly detailed and I love Nya's textured hair piece which was created for The LEGO NINJAGO Movie last year. Her double-sided head includes a wry smile on one side and a frown on the other.

Nya is armed with a double-bladed weapon, resembling that wielded by Samurai X in the first season of NINJAGO: Masters of Spinjitzu. The pearl silver pieces at either end of this weapon are packaged in a small bag with several other blades, all of which are used in this set. Lloyd's dao was introduced in 2017 but lacks a tassel on this occasion.

Lord Garmadon was resurrected at the end of last season and looks more intimidating than ever in my view. His chest armour is cracked so part of the villain's ribcage is visible and a purple substance oozes from between the panels which looks wonderfully gruesome. The designs on the lower torso are more traditional and Garmadon's head remains unchanged from The LEGO NINJAGO Movie, featuring a cunning smile and bushy eyebrows.

70658 Oni Titan

The black helmet was also introduced in The LEGO NINJAGO Movie and is moulded with tremendous detail. I am especially impressed by the small bolts on the back. Lord Garmadon has four arms and is therefore equipped with a selection of weapons to match. He wields two katana in his upper arms while his lower arms grip enormous naginata, pole weapons with curved blades fitted to their end.

70658 Oni Titan

Harumi first appeared in 70643 Temple of Resurrection, wearing a green dress which distinguished her as a member of the royal family. This version of the character is far darker in appearance, reflecting the villainess' true allegiance to the Sons of Garmadon. I like the colour combination of black and dark blue which feels like an homage to Lord Garmadon and the torso is also decorated with a series of attractive metallic silver spikes.

Different expressions are printed on either side of Harumi's head but both feature a red streak across her eyes. This splash of colour looks rather striking in contrast with the white hair piece which is made from a rubbery plastic and has not appeared in this shade before. Harumi wields two red katana which is consistent with the other Sons of Garmadon, most of whom are similarly armed with red blades.

The Completed Model

NINJAGO: Masters of Spinjitzu shows the Oni Titan, sometimes known as the Colossi, towering above almost every building in NINJAGO City and being able to hold 70618 Destiny's Bounty in its arms. This model measures 25cm in height so does not match the vast scale of its onscreen counterpart, although the Colossi still feels enormous in relation to minifigures and I think it is a suitable size for both play and display.

Lord Garmadon created the Oni Titan using his True Potential and it therefore glows with a purple hue, like the resurrected master. This is most clearly visible around the monster's eyes which are printed on a 4x3 curved slope along with some rock designs. I like the Colossi's dark bluish grey hat and its head is mounted on a ball joint so can move around freely, despite being nestled between heavy armour on each shoulder.

The Oni Titan consists primarily of rock but also includes some soil and even a small tree on its right shoulder, just as in the animated series. I like the dark bluish grey and olive green colour scheme as well as the tree root emanating from the front of the creature's shoulder and this is represented by a reddish brown horn component. A few more layers of leaves may have been welcome but I think this simple tree looks good.

Several different kinds of dark bluish grey and olive green slopes form the Colossi's chest, creating an attractive irregular texture. The set only includes three stickers in total, one of which is used on Lloyd's sashimono while the others are applied to the Oni Titan's torso and feature some moss. There is less detail to be found on the back of the figure, although its colour scheme is consistent and structural elements have been properly concealed.

The intricately textured rock continues onto each arm alongside some olive green moss. Ratchet joints at the shoulders and elbows allow a great deal of poseability and the fingers are individually articulated as well which is always useful for creating dynamic displays. In addition, disc launchers are hidden on the back of the monster's hands and can be fired by pressing a Technic plunger.

Lord Garmadon presumably had samurai in mind when creating the Oni Titan as it wears segmented faulds around its waist. These are represented by dark bluish grey tracks and hang loosely so do not restrict the motion of the legs. A pair of swords slot into a scabbard attached to the left fauld and they are held in place remarkably firmly as the scabbard loop can move up and down to fit one or both blades.

The swords will also fit into the Colossi's hands, as demonstrated below. They look quite realistic with the fingers and thumb closed around the hilt and are definitely a suitable size, although the dark bluish grey blades tend to flex so may require some adjustment in order to straighten them properly. However, the tiny pearl silver daggers fitted to the pommel are absolutely delightful.

The Oni Titan stands on two stocky legs which seem somewhat out of proportion beside the torso. Nevertheless, I love the light bluish grey conical hats used on the knees and the rocky texture looks superb. Unfortunately, the knees are not articulated which does restrict the range of possibilities for display, although the hip and ankle joints are both fairly versatile.

Overall

I had high expectations for 70658 Oni Titan and am definitely satisfied with the resultant model. Not only does it look marvellous on display but the set includes several interesting play features and feels sturdy. I particularly like the olive green highlights and the model's organic design distinguishes it from past mechs and large-scale figures of a similar size.

The minifigures are thoroughly impressive as well, although most of these characters appear in 70651 Throne Room Showdown which seems to offer tremendous value. Furthermore, the proportions of the Oni Titan look slightly odd when viewed from certain angles as the legs seem short in relation to the height of the entire figure. Nevertheless, this is a worthy addition to any NINJAGO collection and I would certainly recommend it.

I just wish it was d2c... anyone else have thoughts?

By in United States,

With the several mentions of the throne room set I’m guessing there will be a review on that one too. This set seems like it would be fun to modify so Garmadon can pilot it.

@DaftArcher20968 what is d2c?

I don't normally buy much Ninjago but you've sold me on this one.

Reminds me of Aganos from Killer Instinct. I get a stone golem/nature spirit vibe from it.

By in South Korea,

I already really like the look of the Oni Titan itself, and when I saw the pictures of the minifigs' torso and leg prints I was sold. Lloyd's green armor is absolutely fantastic

By in Spain,

Don't really follow the story or whatever but it's a consistent and cool theme set after set
Have never bought one and probably never will though. ;)

Looks like the Silver Samurai from The Wolverine movie.

By in United States,

The head and face is an ugly failure in an otherwise interesting mech-armor build.

By in South Korea,

I disagree, I quite like the head

CapnRex101...

How about a spoiler warning, for those of us who haven't seen the Sons of Garmadon series yet???

Gravatar
By in United States,

Does anyone know the timeline/release structure for when the latest seasons move to video on demand? Currently it’s only with cable packages, unless I’m missing something.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Do they really refer to a singular entity in the show as “colossi?”

I mean I know it’s a kid show and everything but come on. That’s just dumb.

Reminds me of Daimajin

@AgentR2 - Yes, we will be reviewing 70651 Throne Room Showdown.

@peterlmorris and Skoorbias - The episode synopsis for 'Big Trouble, Little Ninjago' identified the monster as the Colossi. I have a Classics degree so am well aware that 'Colossi' would be a Latin plural, or a genitive singular, although that has no bearing on the name of a being in fiction. Latin may be quite different in the universe of NINJAGO, if the language even exists! Moreover, Japanese words often end in 'i' when transliterated but are singular in meaning and it therefore seems logical that the term 'Colossi' would follow a similar trend.

@Cardinal Brick Yeah, Shadow of Colossus is exactly what came to mind when I first saw this set lol.

@Jamesy, some spoilers are to be expected when looking at new/upcoming sets based on a property that continues to put out new material.

I think the teaser synopsis for its debut episode is where the “Colossi” bit came from. It’s definitely not on show scale-being only a little larger than most Ninjago mechs-but impressive nonetheless. Still would like to see official models of Garmadon’s four-armed mech, the Overlord Dragon, and the Preeminent.

Reminds me of something described in Newman's Anno Dracula: A Thousand Monsters.

Gravatar
By in Sweden,

Quite a nice model, but I wish the legs were just a tad longer. It just looks disproportionate as is.

Gravatar
By in United States,

My Lego store (locally) just told me that they won’t get this until August.

By in United Kingdom,

As soon as this thing appeared on screen I was hoping for a set of it so I was very pleased when images of this set came out :D

I just wish that they had incorporated some translucent purple/violet pieces throughout the body to reflect how in the show Garmadon's dark energies can be seen glowing from between cracks in it's construction. Oh well, something for me to MOD it with :D
