Review: 30382 Baby Velociraptor Playpen

The brand new baby dinosaurs are perhaps the most popular aspect of the Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom range. It is therefore wonderful to see one such dinosaur in 30382 Baby Velociraptor Playpen, a polybag set that is currently being given away with Jurassic World purchases at shop.LEGO.com in Europe.
However, the infant Velociraptor is not the only appealing aspect of this little set. In fact, I find its entire premise to be absolutely charming! Many intelligent animals are known to play so it would perhaps be unsurprising to find baby dinosaurs exhibiting similar behaviour.
Dinosaur
Both variants of the Baby Dino look marvellous but this sand green version is probably my favourite. A dark blue stripe runs along either side of the figure, replicating Blue's patterning and matching the infant dinosaur which has appeared in a couple of trailers for the movie. Its vivid yellow eyes look superb and the level of moulded detail is equally impressive, including a pair of tiny nostrils as well as distinct arms and legs.
The Completed Model
The dinosaur's playpen measures just under 10cm wide so is slightly larger than I was anticipating. Its design is very simple, consisting of a tan entranceway and some fencing. I appreciate the inclusion of scattered dark blue pieces that match the colour scheme of larger sets such as 75927 Stygimoloch Breakout and the light bluish grey telescopes provide some lovely texture for the fence.
A round water dish is situated towards the left of the model and a chicken leg hangs over the fence on the right. This is suspended from a grey arm which can move a short distance from side to side. It might have been nice to see an entirely enclosed pen but that would probably be unrealistic for a polybag set and leaving one side open makes it much easier to play with the Velociraptor inside.
That having been said, I do think the entranceway should have included a door as the model looks odd without one when viewed from the reverse side. The walls look pretty good though, particularly at the corners where 2x2 bricks with a diagonal side are used. These have only appeared in dark blue on a couple of previous occasions so it is great to see them again in a much smaller set.
Overall
30382 Baby Velociraptor Playpen is a lot of fun. The baby dinosaur is undoubtedly the most appealing aspect of the set and looks brilliant, including considerable moulded and printed detail. I am also quite satisfied with the playpen, the colour scheme and design of which is perfectly consistent with the rest of the Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom range.

Thanks for reviewing this near perfect little set, now to get my greedy hands on that tiny dino! I thought this was going to be a Walmart exclusive, yet after several wasted trips (and much wasted money) haven't seen this gem. Any further info. on where/when it will be available to baby dino enthusiasts across the pond?
Really hope this shows up in the US as a purchasable item rather than a GWP. I've been waiting for this set since it got announced. I plan on buying 4 or 5 of them and making a large pen, but if it ends up being a GWP I'll have to reconsider.
To bad this isn't available in North America. I'd certainly get one.
tracked mine down at the LEGOLAND in Kansas city.
Missed out on this, the offer to get it free seemed to disappear from the site after just one day :( If anyone is able to source 2 or 3 of them for me that’d be great and I’d arrange a PayPal payment. :)
@LukeSkywalker I was surprised that when I looked today there was no sign of the offer in the UK. Thankfully I did two LEGO.com orders yesterday...
This will be the perfect addition to the collection! That new baby dino mould is fantastic!
Have to agree with a few posts here, hopefully this makes the jump to North America and Australia as a promo. It was for sale in the US at Wal-mart but seems to no longer be available. I suppose Bricklink is always an option; but when you see a seller listing 199 of this item for sale (as of posting this), and people can't find it locally.... I think id rather give LEGO my money directly.
? that may be the reason why it is no longer available. I want this a swell a the other baby dino nest (brown variant). The book looks great but not a lot of choice given that we will be getting an Idea set for that (not me).
Nice review.
Offer of this set free with Jurassic World purchases has definitely disappeared from shop.lego.com. This time they managed to have enough stock to last an amazing 7% (approximately) of the promotion's run time, which is all too similar to the last promotion.
I can accept that the offer is only 'whilst stocks last' but if they only have enough stock for 2 days of a month long promotion then the dates are just a nonsense.
This polybag is available at the Legoland California Big Shop for $3.99. I picked some up this past weekend while attending Star Wars Days (Part 1).
Thanks to all above for the availability info.! Unfortunately I am hours away from a Brand Store so looks like I'm stuck with more than double original price on BrickLink... although I found City Jungle Explorer Polybag - 40177 (tent!) for a decent price, so it somewhat evens out.
After getting the raptor nest polybag I just fell in love with Lego dinosaurs. So much I bought the JP velociraptor chase and this one is calling to me too. Now to get one in the Netherlands.
I don't really get the big deal about the baby dino. It l It comes in 2 other sets and is just a single piece with printing. The Galimimus Trap one was much better as it came with an exclusive dino.
^Ummm...baby dino army, relatively cheap? ;)
If you are looking for baby dino for cheap then one comes in Brown as a magazine gift. In Poland it's 3,5 euro. https://brickset.com/sets/JW121801-1/Baby-Raptor-and-Nest
When will this set be released in the USA?
We got this last month at LEGOLand in Florida while on vacation. It is a nifty set for sure and I think getting a few and making a larger enclosure by connecting them would be fabulous! Excellent review and spot-on!
@Inkdragon thanks for the heads up, I grabbed a few there!
The new baby dinosaur figures are great if you like this set check out 75903.
Went to Walmart today and found this polybags in the video department along with some of the new JW sets. There were not any polybags in the toy department so be sure to look in the video department.
