Today's random set is 7171 Mos Espa Podrace, released in 1999. It's one of 13 Star Wars sets produced that year. It contains 896 pieces and 10 minifigs, and its retail price was US$90.
It's owned by 3759 Brickset members. If you want to add it to your collection you might find it for sale at BrickLink or eBay.

I never bought many of the original Star Wars sets, but I confess, I'm really looking forward to the comments thread, here... :)
I certainly enjoyed this set! Even if the flags and scenery were kinda rudimentary. Podracers were some of my favorite Star Wars sets and I still feel bad that there haven't been more sets of them.
Back in 1999, this would have been an insanely fun set to get.
I wish I got the remake they made. Would love to see them do it again, probably one of the more iconic scenes from the Prequel Trilogy and the ability to "race" is a cool play feature.
One of the best memories was when two of my older brothers and I opened this set together on the Christmas morning. I was delighted to get Anakin and his pod racer!
I really wanted this set as a kid, but being 14 years old it wasn't very feasible to spend that much money. So a few years ago after coming out of my dark ages, I looked into buying it. Instead I got the updated version.
I wish I'd bought this set now. I passed over all of the TPM sets but I was a poor student at the time too...
I remember the catalogue saying something along the lines of "... or combine all three together to build the fastest pod in the Galaxy!". And that is exactly what I did, the result is one of the MOCs I have kept throughout the years, even though it is a huge and unwieldy hulk that can't really be played with.
This was my first big Lego set when I was a kid and it fueled my love for podracers even more. I seriously wish they'd consider making more sets around the more obscure podracers, or at the very least minifigs to go with my mocs. Especially Ben Quadinaros and Clegg Holdfast.
I remember getting four of these at 75% off just for the orange plates.
Don't see Star Wars sets discounted like that anymore!
I was given this for Christmas in 2003, my dad found it new and in a sealed box, and I could not have been happier. The box has three boxes inside, one for each pod. I've kept everything from it, even stupidly enough, the plastic bags. I own a lot of LEGO Star Wars sets, and my list of favorites is varied and it's hard to say which one is the best because there are certain qualities depending on the type of set, what it has to offer, and then the personal story behind it, too, but if you were to twist my arm, I would have to say 7171 Mos Espa Podrace. I love the designs, I love the figures (even the one piece Sebulba, I like him more than the 2012 design), I am one of those people that finds more enjoyment in the prequels than most, and podracers are up there on my list of things I like about Star Wars. I've even used this framework design for my own Podracer MOCs.

Seeing this set get Random Set of the Day makes me so happy.
EDIT: Just typical... Right after grabbing those links, MOCpages' servers go down. (=_= )
Anyway, here's the better MOC that has some images on Flickr:

@Joefish -- me too, Woolworths was awash with them, and they could hardly give them away...
I officially have 1 piece to this set from a box! XD
I once owned this set but gave it away to the kids of my best buddy. It was one of two prequel sets that i had and as i'm really not interessted in the prequels anymore it was ok for me to give it away. The kids like to "swoosh" around with these things and that's what they're ment for.
BTW: the other prequel set i still own is 7115-1: Gungan Patrol featuring the infamous Jar... *nottobenamed*. It's a cenotaph to not let George Lucas anywhere near a Star Wars film set ever again.
PS: got that last one as a gift, would have never spent a dime for that crap.
UCS Podrace when? ;)
That was a great set! If I remember correctly, it was quite exceptional such an amount of orange bricks back then ;) The only flaw was Sebulba's minifig…
Just brought this over from my parents' house a couple days ago and broke it down to go with the rest of the non-display Star Wars sets. Figures are definitely rudimentary compared to today, but that's also nearly 20 years ago. I wish they could have figured out a way to not need the tan bracing part, but aside from that the set actually has aged decently.
Is this the first SW RSOTD we've had? I've always wanted Gasgano's podracer from this set. I ended up getting his head piece in a mix of minifigure parts on ebay, and I'm sure I have the other bits to make the rest of his strange body. I did get 7962 which had the much improved versions of Sebulba's and Anakin's podracers. I think an update/new set with some of the other podracers, such as Gasgano (his original minifigure could use a world of improvement), Aldar Beedo, Ben Quadinaros, and Clegg Holdfast would be a great thing, as MRos1025 mentioned above.
@LegoSolo77 There have been a number of Star Wars RSOTD posts, in fact, the third post was the first one. Although you can't comment on them, you should check out the archives.

- one of the first sets I bought after my dark ages
- my single Star Wars set
- I bought two at 50% discount
- I opened one for the orange and green bricks and got disappointed:
> many round or sloped parts that were not useful to me at all
> atrocious alien minifig
I kept a few regular parts and sold the useless bits within a bigger lot.
I also sold the second box MISB.
Some sets are not getting "better" even at a huge discount.
(The later podracer bucket - https://brickset.com/sets/7159-1/Star-Wars-Bucket - appears to be worse.)
This one is even better then the 2011 one, it just looks cooler for some reason.
