Review: 41485 Finn

LEGO's most popular licensed theme was absent from the first wave of BrickHeadz sets but two characters from Star Wars: The Force Awakens have now been released. 41485 Finn depicts the reluctant hero wearing his Stormtrooper armour which is surprising given its limited screen time in the movie, although this version is ideal for display beside 41486 Captain Phasma.
The Completed Model
The figure stands on a square base which is far more stable than the rectangular bases included with most of the first series. It features a 2x4 tile which denotes the exclusivity of the set to certain stores, those being Toys R Us in North America and Tesco in the UK. The new BrickHeadz models are also available directly from shop.LEGO.com, as usual.
BrickHeadz figures feature unusual proportions so detail from the torso, arms and legs is often omitted. I was therefore somewhat sceptical about the design of 41485 Finn as First Order Stormtrooper armour is quite intricate so would look very plain with too much detail removed. Fortunately, I think the simple depictions of the utility belt and the gap between Finn's abdominal armour plates is perfect, as are the few black pieces which represent the body glove beneath his armour.
The legs make use of headlight bricks with white tiles attached to the front and sides, a technique which works surprisingly well in depicting additional armour. It is disappointing to see no printing on the back of the figure though as this side does look very plain without it, despite the inclusion of a brick-built thermal detonator which I rather like.
Finn's face is very simply constructed using reddish brown tiles and a pair of printed BrickHeadz eyes while his hair is represented by black plates. The studs are left exposed to create some lovely texture and I appreciate the attempt to depict shorter hair at the back using tiles but this is not entirely effective in my view. I think a consistent studded surface would have been more successful here.
The figure comes complete with a simple blaster rifle, consisting of just five pieces. It can be held in either hand and features a black and white colour scheme which resembles the F11-D rifle from the movie quite closely. 41486 Captain Phasma wields a similar weapon with its own colour scheme to match her armour, just as in the film.
Overall
The simple colour scheme and design of 41485 Finn did not immediately appeal to me when it was revealed but in actuality I think it looks pretty impressive on the whole. The few printed elements are very effective and I like the studs which are left exposed to represent textured hair, a technique not seen on many other BrickHeadz.
However, the model does not include any particularly distinguishing features so does not offer the same appeal as more elaborate figures such as 41588 The Joker or 41595 Belle. Even so, this is certainly a good depiction of the character and I would recommend the set to existing fans of the BrickHeadz theme and Star Wars.

Despite the relative plainness of this guy, He is actually one of my favorites! I can't wait to pick him up!
Still prefer the Bobba fett and han in carbonite double pack,
I, d use Finns parts to build something else,
Also captain phasma looks more like a cylon from battle star galactica.
Better than it looked when it was first revealed,I'll probably
use the parts to build a brickheadz stormtrooper.
Just build the 4 new BH's today. I like Captain Phasma best, but Finn is okay.
These 4 new sets are numbered 17 to 20. I also own the first 12, but which sets are numbered 13 to 16?

I've just seen Rey and Kylo Ren on the brick fan and the sand speeder, all miles better.
As for finn and phasma..
They're good but they're not quite Carling..
^ Thx legoavenger14...I couldn't figure it out but the shaping and color reminded me of something and you got it...a cylon. Even though he's 'simpler', I like Finn better. Woulda' been nice to have it packaged with extra parts to build a helmet to attach.

I don't like the figures selected here. I'd have rather seen "real" Star Wars characters, not TFA.
I like Phasma's Brickhead, to be honest.
@damien The SDCC Brickheadz from this year (Spidey, Venom, Supergirl, Martian Manhunter) are labelled as 13-17 for some reason.. I find it annoying since you aren't able to get all the Brickheadz in numerical order unless you fork over ~$100 for each set. Bah!

Do you know whether any retailers are going to be selling these in Australia? I've caught the Brickheadz bug, & whilst I won't pay $200 for Comic Con exclusives, I do want these ones - and the two Ninjago releases as well.
The thermal detonator looks like a fluffy bunny tail!
I love Lego and own about 120 sets and over 500 minifigs, but I really can't understand how anybody can be interested in these ugly BrickHeadz things...
THe curly hair represented by the 2x4 plate is ingenious.
