Review: 41592 The Hulk

Posted by ,

Like many other LEGO fans I was quite taken with the BrickHeadz when the first publicity shots appeared, and I’ve been following Huw and CapnRex101’s BrickHeadz reviews with interest over the past few weeks. Despite my initial enthusiasm, however, I hadn’t actually taken the plunge myself so was happy to oblige when Huw asked me to review one of the BrickHeadz, 41592 The Hulk, for Brickset. The set duly arrived, and I’ve now had a chance to build it. So did the BrickHeadz, and The Hulk in particular, live up to expectations? Read on to find out....

Box & Contents

The front of the pleasingly compact box is printed with an image of the completed build superimposed upon a dark red background watermarked with the Avengers logo. I was expecting a straightforward build so was surprised to see the “10+” age recommendation. One of the side panels features an image of The Hulk resplendent with olive green skin; my assumption is that producing the model in olive green wasn’t viable as too many of the necessary elements don’t currently exist in that colour. The back of the box shows the completed build hovering above its display base alongside thumbnails of the four Avenger BrickHeadz.

There’s a single thumb tab at the base of the box which seems like a strange place to put it – assuming you plan to replace the contents when you’re done, this will mean that the contents will probably fall out of the bottom of the box when you pick it up in future.... I ignored the thumb tab and instead used a knife to loosen the flap at the top of the box. Lifting the flap revealed a single, folded instruction booket (cover shot below), a black 4 x 6 plate and two sealed, unnumbered bags of elements.

The Build

The build predictably follows the standard BrickHeadz template outlined here and commences with The Hulk’s torso. This is constructed on a dark purple 4 x 4 plate which is appearing in a set for only the seventh time ever. The Hulk’s bulging abs and pecs are printed on a pair of 1 x 4 green bricks, and these printed elements are predictably unique to the set; for some reason The Hulk only gets a four pack rather than a six pack…. There’s a light bluish gray modified 1 x 2 x 1 2/3 brick with studs on 1 side on either side of the torso to provide the attachment point for the arms, the upper part of which comprise a green hinge brick 1 x 2 base and 2 x 2 top plate. This hinge arrangement is surprisingly rare in green – the base has only previously appeared in 3 sets in this colour, and the green 2 x 2 hinge top plate is currently unique to this set. As is the case for the other BrickHeadz the head has at its core 12 light bluish grey modified 1 x 2 x 1 2/3 bricks with studs on 1 side. The head is topped off with a black 4 x 4 plate covered with a sprinkling of black cheese slopes to represent hair.

The Hulk’s face is fashioned next. His eyes consist of the same printed black 1 x 1 round tiles that have been used for the majority of BrickHeadz to date, and they’re mounted on a green modified 1 x 4 plate with 2 studs which is unique to this set. The sides of the head incorporate ears in the form of green double cheese slopes and more black hair represented by black plates and cheese slopes. The legs are made up of a couple of dark purple 1 x 2 bricks, with green 1 x 2 plates representing feet. The completed model is mounted on a base which features the now-familiar BrickHeadz Series 1 printed tile.

You can see the rear of the completed model below. Another black 4 x 4 plate studded with black cheese slopes is attached to the back of the head to complete The Hulk’s impressive head of hair, but other than that there’s not much to see.

The Verdict

I can definitely see the appeal of the BrickHeadz. The chibi-esque styling is undoubtedly cute, and the relatively crude nature of the models doesn’t detract from that. I don’t think that The Hulk has translated particularly well into BrickHeadz form, though. He’s certainly recognisable, but his torso needs more bulk and his arms and hands look decidedly odd and awkward. The printed abs and pecs are a plus point, but overall, unless you’re a completist and/or a massive Hulk fan I think there are better alternatives in the first wave of BrickHeadz sets.

41592 The Hulk contains 93 elements and is available now from LEGO brand stores and shop.lego.com at an RRP of £9.99 / $9.99 / €9.99.

Many thanks to the LEGO Group for providing Brickset with a copy of the set. All opinions expressed in this review are my own.

Wow, I'm not a fan of the brick headz in general, but hulk looks particularly boring. He's definitely only one to grab if you're looking to complete your collection.

I think Hulk is one of the weakest Brickheadz.

Definitely not one of the best BrickHeadz so far. But still a good character to buy if you want to complete the set or Hulk is your favorite avenger.

My third least favorite Brickheadz.

@Trigger_ Who are 1and 2 then?

Anyways, not one of my favorites. Pretty bland looking, and the size just doesn't work for me- Princess Belle shouldn't be bigger than the hulk! :)

By in Sweden,

Think I'd like it a lot more if it had "normal" Brickheadz arms instead. It's so disproportionate either way, and these odd arms just make it look too different from the others.

Eh, not a fan of Brickheadz in general and this definitely isn't one I'd make an exception for.

I don't like the arms. But I like the way they did the eyebrows

Confirmed! Hulk only has a four pack. He needs to hit the gym...

@101Dalek I definitely have an unpopular opinion with 1 and 2, but here it is:
2 is Batman.
1 is Captain America.

By in United States,

I wish I could like the brickheadz but they just annoy me. They aren't cute, they aren't proportionate, they're not -- anything but specifically colored Lego. I don't even see buying them for parts. Presumably someone loves them -- they are more than welcome to my share. Hulk seems especially weak in what I think is a fairly lame line altogether.
