Review: 75523 Scarif Stormtrooper

The Citadel facility on Scarif is protected by a garrison of Shoretroopers who patrol the beaches in search of intruders. 75523 Scarif Stormtrooper is one such sentry and this set therefore elicits high expectations from me as I love the design of the Shoretroopers and they appear a great deal throughout the movie.

The Buildable Figure is priced at £19.99 or $24.99 and contains 89 pieces, several of which include new printed designs or are cast in new colours, so seems to offer reasonable value for money in relation to the others in this line. Previous armoured figures have been thoroughly impressive so I hope to be similarly satisfied with this model.

The Completed Model

Armoured characters are consistently among my favourite Buildable Figures and I think 75523 Scarif Stormtrooper is more than a match for those which have gone before. The model measures a little over 24cm tall and is richly decorated from head to toe, with a mixed colour scheme which strikes a remarkably appropriate balance between muted military hues and bright colours.

Helmets are a consistently impressive feature of the Buildable Figures range and the one worn by this Shoretrooper is perhaps the best yet in my opinion. It is accurately decorated with a black visor and a textured respirator while the right temple features a red symbol which signifies this trooper's involvement with the Death Star project. There is some realistic battle damage represented by rows of tiny dark bluish grey spots and the printing continues onto the back of the helmet where a couple of vents are located.

The chest panel is equally detailed. It features some more weathering alongside a couple of sand blue markings which match the wrist and shoulder armour on the left arm. This colour denotes the rank of captain and certainly makes the figure look more interesting but also reduces its army building potential quite considerably.

The back of the figure is reasonably well finished, with a large panel covering most of the internal torso structure as well as shoulder blades which fill the areas on either side of the neck. A grenade is fixed to the back of the belt and this incorporates a pair of 1L beams which appear in tan for the first time. This accessory also serves an important structural purpose, securing the plastic faulds around the hips of the Shoretrooper.

I was concerned that the faulds may restrict poseability but this is not the case as the soft plastic is quite flexible. Four pouches adorn the right thigh and these complement the dark brown thigh coverings which have only previously been used in black. The greaves are exceptionally detailed. Each one is decorated with vertical lines which give the illusion of a ribbed design and are very faithful to the appearance of these troopers in the movie.

The Shoretrooper is armed with an E-22 blaster rifle which is most notable for its double-barreled design. This blaster includes a firing missile as we have come to expect but also incorporates a stud shooter which is very clever and differentiates this weapon from those which have appeared in earlier sets. This second barrel should run the length of the rifle but it stops short for the trigger which is unfortunate, although I am not sure how it could have been avoided. Otherwise the blaster looks great, with a nicely shaped stock and a spotlight fitted to the side.

Overall

75523 Scarif Stormtrooper is another excellent addition to the growing collection Buildable Figures and represents another example of the brilliant work done by the sculptors of new elements for these sets. The helmet looks absolutely brilliant and the rest of the figure is equally impressive, with plenty of printed detail and a splendid combination of different colours.

75523 Scarif Stormtrooper

I have no significant criticisms of the figure but favour 75524 Chirrut Îmwe over this set simply because the Rebel character is more prevalent in the film and offers slightly better value for money based on the inclusion of a larger weapon and a fabric component. Nevertheless, I recommend 75523 Scarif Stormtrooper to Buildable Figures fans and hope that we might one day see an Imperial Stormtrooper to stand alongside this character in service of the Empire.

By in Puerto Rico,

That grenade accessory had a very dark part in the movie....RIP RO and may the Force be with you. That said who wouldn't have liked to have that Mon Cala Cruiser we see in the film with Admiral Raddus in it rather than its inclusion in the Y-Wing.

By in Canada,

This guy's colors make his design much less boring than many other "trooper" type sets, particularly the Imperial Death Trooper buildable figure. At the same time, he still doesn't excite me nearly as much as named protagonist characters like Chirrut and Baze, and I don't currently have any plans to add him to my collection.

The amount of printed elements and elements that come in odd numbers might somewhat limit this guy's value as a parts pack, but he does have a lot of good recolors despite tan being a color we've seen in several previous buildable figures. It's neat to see that LEGO is able to print the greaves. That could make for interesting possibilities in the future.

His gun is an alright build that stands out from previous blasters with its two shooting functions. I didn't really recognize the grenade for what it was, though, since it blends in with the colors of the rest of the build. Now that you've pointed it out I'm glad to learn he does have a "secondary weapon" of sorts, since it varies up the potential play scenarios a little bit.

Thanks for the review! Looking forward to the Baze Malbus review!

I really like the way you posed the shoretrooper. I will be buying him as soon as he comes out.

That is the best pose I have ever seen a buildable figure have. Good review, looking forward to getting it.

Nice! While the captain color scheme is somewhat limiting, as far as army building is concerned, it looks FAR more colorful and interesting compared to the plain old tan/brown of the standard Shoretroopers. Also, at $25 a pop, 4 of these guys will run you $100 in debt, so... army building is a little difficult in that regard : ). Also, I'm so shocked to see they still haven't made a regular Stormtrooper! First Order troopers, Phasma, Commander Cody, Death Troopers, and Shoretroopers all get sets... but easily the oldest and most iconic characters of them all are nowhere to be found? Weird, I guess I add them to my list of characters I want as these figures, along with Boba Fett, Darth Maul, Mace Windu, Han, Leia, Chewie, 3PO, R2, BB-8, the Bounty Hunters from Empire...uh, I may have set my hopes a little too high. Oh well, excellent review as always, glad to see these guys getting some love!

Love this guy, especially after playing the Scarif DLC for many hours. I just picked up Poe today on clearance to start my collection.

Great review. I also want to say the posing is top-notch! I will be watching expected Wal-Mart markdowns before grabbing this, but I do plan on getting it - it's a nicely designed figure.

TLG should consider including the alternate parts to allow for building either officer or grunt varieties in these types of sets. Would make them even more attractive as parts packs, and encourage multiple sales. I'm sure many of us would end up wanting to have both varieties built at the same time ;)

Looks great! Love the variations they make to each of the blaster rifles for all of the troopers!

I know this is the wrong place but... how do you get a box of collectible minifigs?!

I like this set and will definetly get it. In the future I am hoping for a regular stormtrooper. I also want Mace Windu, Obi wan or Anakin from episode III, Yoda, Boba Fett, Chewbacca, Han Solo (original triology), Battledroid, scouttrooper, Palpatine, Darth Maul.

@CapnRex101 did you happen to review K2SO? I know you reviewed Jyn too.

By in Australia,

I'm amazed that there's still no regular Stormtrooper in these figures. Those characters are so iconic, and it's crazy that Lego hasn't done them yet.
