9493 X-Wing

Posted by ,

9493 X-WingI haven't quite finished building the new 9493 X-Wing, so until I have, please make do with pictures of the minifigs.

The set comes with four, two of which are new.

The first new one is Jek Porkins, left, who was pilot of 'Red Six' X-Wing. He was killed in the Battle of Yavin. You may recall his cockpit filling with smoke when his X-Wing was hit by enemy fire. His helmet and head are unique, and LEGO has done a good job on the markings on the helmet, which look close to those shown in the image.

9493 X-WingThe second new one is Jek's astromech droid R5-D8. This uses the new conical dome part for its head.

On first glance you could question why LEGO has included two pilots and two mechs. It becomes clear when you view the instructions: you can build either Luke's or Jek's X-Wing: there's an extra set of tiles and stickers in the box to mark up the wings with a 6th red stripe to indicate Jek's machine.

If I can get the X-Wing in my light tent I'll photograph it tomorrow...

By in United States,

I thought that there would probably be two slightly differently ways to build the ship, given that there is two pilots, and that that is what they did with the last X-Wing. Really liking the helmets on both Luke and Jek. Luke's especially is much improved on what it used to be.

Given my sudden desire to collect astromech droid minifigs (not sure how this came about) even if I don't get the set, I'll be sure to grab the R5-D8/D4. He looks rather interesting.

This is a must by for Porkin's face alone.

I also seem to be strangely drawn to astromech drioids of late. I think it's that beautiful new one in the Tie Fighter.

@Goldfish and sarlacc98 - His face is fantastic, maybe the best bit of the entire set! Shame about Luke's face though, I wish he had one of those orange visors as well.

The printing on the white vest doesn't look right. Looks a like it needed a second coat or something. Reminds me of the soldiers from the PotC Set The London Escape 4193, where the white printing on the X pattern on their chest looked almost pinkish due to the red undercoat...

What I really want to know, is how it compares to 6212. Detail out the specific differences. Other than the obvious minifigures, what should compel an owner of 6212 to want to get 9493?

Put another way, assuming you only want 1 x-wing on display, and already have the 6212, what is the driver to upgrade?

Funny, When I first saw episode IV I thought his name was "Jet". (I dislike the orange visors though)

Since Porkins is a fat dude, the irony is that the Lego scale in terms of his "height" to "width" ratio is perfect. This figure is awesome.

@dougts, the driver to upgrade is as follows:

1. The laser cannons are at a more correct length.
2. The engines are now placed correctly off center.
3. The nose is now 3 studs wide instead of 2 before it hits the 6x4 slope, giving a much better ease into the nose.
4. The pieces on the side of the cockpit are the new, longer slopes, making it sleeker.
5. The fuselage is now correctly hexagonal.
6. There are now slopes at the side of the engines down to the wings, like there's supposed to be.
7. There are now markings inside the engines (even though they are stickers.... :/)
8. This one has proton torpedos.
9. The wings are correctly oriented - studs on top on the top wings, studs on bottom on the bottom wings (instead of studs facing up on both sets of wings) - making the wings more identical to each other.
10. The best one - on the old X-Wing, it looks ages to open the wings. On this one, they snap open with only half a turn.

These are my reasons. :)

@Kulturkampf

thanks - exactly what I was looking for. I had noticed 3,4,9, and some general better transitions between elements by comparing the pictures, but it's good to have a detailed list like this.

it appears that the R2 unit has to go in sideways now - is this correct?

You know having to wait for the 2012 sets and reading these reviews helps me chose what sets to get... All of them I know that it will take me forever seeing as how I get 12 dollars bit I want them all!!!!

By in Canada,

Love Jek. Same as the X-Wing from 2006, where you could mke it either Red Five (Luke) or Red Three (Wedge Antilles). No special droid for Wedge, though.

Gravatar
By in United States,

@dougts, sadly yes. That's one aspect about this X-Wing that downgraded from 6212.

Great review!
Sorry for this being off topic, but huw, you sort of just sprang to us about Palpatine's arrest and the Mandolian Starfighter :-P
Can we get more info please?

It looks like the white ink on the pilot bodies is too thin - it has an orange tint to it. I hate it when this happens - the same happened to my santa yoda :(

"you can build either Luke's or Jek's X-Wing"

They did the same thing with 6212; I think you could choose between Wedge's Red 2 and Luke's Red 5. I'd be curious to see a comparison of the two, because at first glance I don't see much of a difference between them.

By in United Kingdom,

When went to the Bright lego store they had completely sold out of super heroes sets apart from the ultrabuilds and most of the new star wars had already gone :(

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

@iabstract - The only difference is that one Luke's X-wing there are five stripes on the wings, On Jek's there are six (You can add an extra one by one tile with a sticker on to add another stripe).

Gravatar
By in United States,

Kulturkampf: Thanks that was exactly what I was wondering!

^ I haven't managed to take any decent photos of it yet. I have a 80cm light tent on order from eBay and will then need some A2 card for a backdrop. Hopefully I'll be organised over the weekend.

This is for those that are hesitant in paying for the new 9493 x-wing when they already have the 6212 x-wing:

I honestly think that it's very much like the other x-wing. Lego wants to make more money and this is how they're doing it. They remake older sets. The 2011 naboo fighter is a scam compared to the 2007 naboo fighter. They are almost exactly alike. I recognize that they do this though to give those that did not have the opportunity to buy the past sets, the opportunity. I feel that the new jedi interceptor coming out is almost the same as obi wan's jedi interceptor with the booster ring although the new jedi interceptor does have a compartment to place r2 which is a huge plus and the new sith anakin looks ridiculously awesome. Just expressing my own opinion, I believe that if you have the 2006 6212 model then you don't have to worry about this one. Save your money for something a little better like jabba's palace uless you want to put 60 in for porkins.

Once again I'm not saying that remakes are bad. The new tie fighter is fantastic! I've seen the new x-wing though and it's not unique compared to 6212. However if you're a hardcore x-wing fan, buy it. I've got every Slave I set from the 2000 set to the 2010 because I'm a Boba Fett enthusiast.

By in United Kingdom,

@trickydicky0880 - The new X-wing really is worth getting, there are a lot of improvements over the older one, especially in how the wings open and close.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I have to agree with CapnRex101. Check out my earlier comment describing ten improvements in the new X-Wing. SO much better than 6212.

By in United States,

Just curious, but where's the review? I've been waiting all week, and I'm a little sad I'll not get to actually see it.
