Review: 30277 First Order Star Destroyer

The Star Wars: The Force Awakens range is fairly comprehensive in its coverage of the film as the vast majority of scenes and characters have appeared in sets. The Finalizer, a Resurgent-class Star Destroyer, has only been represented by 30277 First Order Star Destroyer thus far.

This is unfortunate as I think a larger model is warranted, although the polybag is a decent offering in my opinion and some simple modifications might perfect it.

The Completed Model

The famous wedge shape of the Imperial-class Star Destroyer is carried over for the Resurgent-class vessel and they look fairly similar at first sight. The primary difference between the original design and this one is the layered appearance of the lower decks, a feature of the design which is replicated quite nicely by this little model. Several trans-yellow plates are used to represent lights and these look great when catching the light.

Unfortunately the subtle details of the bridge superstructure have not been rendered very well here. The round section to the left of the command tower does not resemble anything seen on the vessel in the film, although I appreciate the assymetry which is accurate to the source material. The engines, on the other hand, look great and the shaping of the hull is also impressive, forming a sharp angle above and below the thrusters.

Overall

Of the nine polybags revealed so far, this is probably the least appealing, although I must stress that this is certainly not a bad model and I think it is recognisable as a Resurgent-class Star Destroyer despite its shortcomings. Hopefully we will see a larger model of the Finalizer at some point, akin to 75055 Imperial Star Destroyer, but until then I am satisfied with this miniature one.

The next instalment in the 'What's Missing?' series will be published this weekend, although the original schedule has been altered slightly. According to popular demand I am going to cover Star Wars: The Clone Wars in full and push the Revenge of the Sith article back to next month.

By in Canada,

I would imagine that "What's Missing?" from the clone wars would be extensive... there were 6 seasons! I hope rebels lasts as long.

By in Senegal,

It's a decent polybag but the Resurgent-class star destroyer is a rather forgettable ship in the first place so that does not really boost it's appeal.

Neat review, how do we obtain this polybag (thanks in advance)?

By in United States,

A larger set of this Star Destroyer would make a nice flagship set (pun intended) for January 2017.

Yeah, LEGO... I want a big one. Maybe they're waiting until the last Star Destroyer gets discontinued this summer, and then they'll release one in 2017? Because the Finalizer was pretty awesome, and I think it's pretty much all that's left of the First Order now. :P

@Lordmoral - The polybag has appeared on eBay and is rumoured to be part of an upcoming newspaper promotion in the UK, but I am not sure where or when it will be sold elsewhere.

Thanks for the review. I like the Resurgent-class model and would love to see a larger version.

Looking forward to the Clone Wars article!
