Review: 75125 Resistance X-wing Fighter

The Microfighters range will soon be entering its third year and it seems to be continuing as strongly as ever. 75125 Resistance X-wing Fighter is one of two new Microfighters based on Star Wars: The Force Awakens and is the only one in the third series to include a brand new minifigure, so immediately has an advantage over the others.
This is the second X-wing to be represented as a Microfighter after 75032 X-wing Fighter, although the colour scheme has been significantly updated. Unfortunately the shape of the new model is very similar to the older one, a fact which I will discuss further later in the review.
Box and Contents
It is interesting to note that no Star Wars: The Force Awakens branding appears on the packaging. This is very surprising as the image of Kylo Ren, which is featured on almost every other current Star Wars product, seems to have been very successful in drawing customers so I would expect that to be exploited at every opportunity. In its current state I do not think it will be immediately obvious to most that this set is based on The Force Awakens, at least not without a closer look at the box.
The reverse side shows all six of the new Microfighters but highlights 75126 First Order Snowspeeder while also showing off the flick-fire missiles mounted on the X-wing. The positions of the two models based on The Force Awakens are reversed on the box for 75126 although the background is almost identical.
Minifigure
The minifigure is described as a Resistance X-wing Pilot on the box but he actually represents a character named Snap Wexley, played in the film by Greg Grunberg. The most appealing element of the new figure is his helmet which is printed with a huge amount of detail and looks like an almost exact replica of the prop from the movie. The head is new as well and features a black beard which looks close to that of the character but is also sufficiently generic that you could re-use it elsewhere.
Although the torso and legs are identical to those of Poe Dameron and the Resistance Pilot included in 75102 Poe's X-wing Fighter, they look fantastic. Dark orange is the perfect colour choice and the designs of the flight suit are impressively intricate on the front and back.
I happen to know that we will see more Resistance pilots appearing in future sets based on The Force Awakens and I can hardly wait to add them to the squadron!
The Completed Model
While the minifigure is superb, I think this set is let down by the T-70 X-wing itself. Aspects of the design have been captured here but most of the model is almost identical to 75032 X-wing Fighter. The colours have been altered and the wings are constructed quite differently, although not accurately at all, but the fuselage uses many of the same building techniques and pieces. In some respects that is only to be expected as the two vehicles are obviously going to be similar but there are some major differences between the T-65 and the T-70 which this model makes no attempt to recreate.
The complicated design of the S-foils on the new X-wing seems to have posed a significant problem for the designers of 75102 Poe's X-wing Fighter and this set, although it is more notable on the Microfighter. There seems to have been no attempt made to accurately recreate the division of the wings along the centre. Instead, both foils are laid on top of one another which is more like the T-65 than the T-70. It seems futile to criticise a Microfighter for a lack of accuracy, but this could easily have been improved.
Unlike the older X-wing there is no droid included behind the cockpit and the split engines are represented using 2x2 half cylinder elements, which look rather good, although some printing would have been welcome.
Overall
The Resistance X-wing is a disappointing model but the minifigure is superb and will obviously be a necessity to complete your Star Wars: The Force Awakens minifigure collection. The colour scheme is quite attractive and I like the engine pods too, although the design of the wings really damages the model in my opinion.
I do not recommend this set but Snap Wexley looks great and if you can acquire the minifigure at a reasonable price on the aftermarket it is worth picking up. At the time of publishing it is only four hours until I will be seeing the movie so I look forward to spotting this character!

I'm collecting resistance pilots! Can't wait for more. This set looks quite nice, I think.
Yes, not long to go now! I've been having a episode 4, 5 and 6 marathon today with my daughter ahead of us going out later for the midnight screening.
BTW, great review and pics, thanks!
Wow, I'm jealous of you guys being able to go to the first showing. Can't wait. I'll be going on Sun.
Totally agree with the review; minifigure is great, vehicle not so great.
Blue and gray... all it needs is trans-yellow. :)
I wonder if whoever chose the colors had Classic Space in mind...
Nice minifig. He was the most prominent pilot other than Poe in the film. I hope there's a full scale blue x-wing coming in the future!
Almost done watching the original trilogy. Seeing TFA tomorrow evening, can't wait...!
The minifigure is so good I doubt it will be cheap at all in the aftermarket.
I am also going to the midnight screening tonight and can't wait! I love the Resistance pilot, but I agree that the X-Wing is poor. It looks a right mess! A real shame, as I loved the X-Wing from the first wave. I'll still be buying it though, as I have to have them all!
These photos look so render-like, it's awesome!
I don't mind about the vehicle as he will be piloting the Avengers Quinjet from Age of Ultron so I will be getting one of these and use the vehicle for pieces.
Wow, this is really disappointing. Aside from the pilot, there is no incentive to buy such a poor-looking ship...
I like to think that we're buying these micro sets just for the minifigs, as they've always been cheaper alternatives. If Lego releases a mini Kylo Ren Command Shuttle or First Order Transporter, I'd definitely buy them for the minifigs. Strangely enough, these micro sets offer normal blasters instead of the horrible stud shooters.
let us no if you like the movie.
Are those flick-fire missiles flick-fire missiles ?
HAHAHAHA
Definitely getting this set only for the minifig. I almost get physically sick building these microfighters: I just can't bring myself to build something which I completely hate the look of.
I loved the movie, BTW. Us Europeans were lucky enough to have TFA on general release starting Wednesday morning.
No droid, incorrect wing design and I actually don't like the engines at all. Not a patch on 75032.
Good review Capn and I hope you enjoyed the film :D
I'll be watching the film tomorrow, so I might finally be drawn into collecting the Force Awakens sets.
I need to get this only because it's Grunberg as a Minifig. Love that guy!
Awesome set. Definitely need to get it.
im seeing it at nine e o clock tonight its gonna be amazing :)
Porkins Jr!
Just got this set today and it is a bit disappointing that they haven't captured the split wing design even remotely or added a droid head behind the pilot. Colour wise, a version of Poe's black x-wing would have looked so much better, next to the original x-wing MF this looks rather plain.
I hope they release a series 4 mid year with some more TFA sets, Ren's shuttle would be cool and I'd like to see a 'classic' TIE fighter too.
