Paintings of the Crucifixion, almost always done by Catholic or Orthodox painters, tend over the centuries to cycle from realistic to stylized and back to realistic. The realistic paintings emphasize Christ's suffering. This painting emphasizes that suffering, but also the love that Mary and John have for Jesus. The painter has lowered the typical height of the crucified Jesus to bring him closer to Mary and John, who are holding hands. More than most pictures of the Crucifixion, this painting emphasizes the suffering of Christ but also the love of Christians for Christ and for each other. Bruno René de Cramer (1876-1951) was born into a devout Belgian Catholic family whose father was a carpenter. At a young age, he moved to Ghent and studied at the St. Luc School which had recently been founded to promote spiritual revival through art. His long career was spent mostly doing Catholic art. He did the high altar in the crypt of St. Therese's Basilica in Lisieux (shown above), among many other projects. This painting is reportedly in St. Peter's church in Ghent, which was rebuilt by de Cramer's close friend, architect Valentin Vaerwijck.
