French is one of the six official languages of the United Nations. We celebrate this special day to embrace multilingualism, cultural diversity and to promote equal use of all six official languages. They selected March 20th as French Language Day because it was concurrent with the 40th anniversary of La Francophonie, an International Organization in which members share a common tongue, as well as the humanist values promoted by the French language.
