The rise and fall of Xanax in clinical trials reveal a startling story: while initially reducing panic attacks, it ultimately caused more harm than good, with long-term use leading to severe withdrawal symptoms. Despite the concerning results, early positive findings were highlighted, and longer-term findings were muted. (4 weeks showed improvement against placebo. 8 weeks showed no difference, and at the end of 14 weeks, Xanax patients were doing worse than the placebo patients).
Creating Psychiatric Disorders
The DSM-5, often considered the "Bible of Psychiatry," lacks scientific isolation for its criteria. "Not one thing in {the DSM-5] is isolated by science. There are no physical findings. No PET Scan, No MRI. Just behavior described by psychiatry and labeled abnormal..." Instead, behaviors are described, labeled, and voted upon by committees, making diagnoses like acute stress disorder somewhat arbitrary, as seen with its 28-day billing-friendly cutoff.
