Vlad Tepes, or Vlad the Impaler, was the voivode (ruler) of Wallachia in present day Romania. He became a Turkish janissary after his father was murdered by Hungarian enemies. His father was nicknamed "the Dragon" which in Romanian is "Dracul" hence Vlad was "Dracula" meaning "Son of the Dragon." Vlad used impalement against the invading Turks as a form of psychological intimidation. Or maybe he just enjoyed it.
