I do a test spot then add more water or paint as needed. Then I wipe it back with a cloth. I will wait to see how it looks when it dries and determine if it needs a second coat. If you ever come across a piece that’s already been sanded on Marketplace/thrifting, just do yourself a favor and grab it! It’ll be a blank canvas for a paint wash, stain, or paint! Why do a paint wash? Even if you add a water based polyurethane (vs. oil), it’ll still darken the wood slightly and will likely pull out the yellow and orange tones from the wood. You can test what the color may look like by wiping a wet rag over the surface to show what a water based poly will do. To avoid darkening or yellowing, doing a paint wash (adding water and a white or tan paint) before your poly will prevent that! I’ll let you know my favorite tan paint but truly any cream or tan paint w Paint Washed Kitchen Cabinets, Tan Wash Kitchen Cabinets, Tan Paint Wash Furniture, Paint That Looks Like White Oak, Tan Painted Kitchen Cabinets, Tone Down Orange Wood Cabinets, Tan Wash Cabinets, Tan Washing Furniture, Beige Wash Furniture

Works perfect to even out splotchy wood tones and is great for getting that light, bleached wood look without the harsh chemicals and long dry times. Once this dries, I’ll go over it with a water base top coat and she’s done! I have a “tan wash” highlight with more details on how to use this technique.

You may think that once you strip something to bare wood, you can just apply topcoat and voila, it’s gorgeous!

But that is not always the case. Natural wood has many different undertones and it’s rare to actually find a piece made in wood that will be appealing to today’s buyer. Today’s aesthetic is more neutral rather than the orange or yellow tones of natural wood.

This is why we use things like a tan wash to cancel out undesirable colors while still letting the wood grain be the main attraction.

To apply a tan wash, you must first prep your piece by cleaning and stripping. I prefer to sand over a chemical stripper.

Once it’s prepped, I mix a tan wash using 1 part paint to 5 parts water.
