What is now known as the famous “Midan El Tahrir” was actually called Midan Ismailiya until the 1952 revolution and overthrow of the monarchy. It was renamed Midan Tahrir - Liberation Square. The statue of Khedive Ismail, King Farouk’s grandfather, was never placed on its pedestal, of course.
