When you transplant your tomato, you can either bury the string underneath your tomato to secure it in the ground, or tie the string to a stake and press into the soil.

Then, tie the other end of the string to a simple structure above the tomato plant made of 2x4 lumber or metal conduit. Both are relatively inexpensive at most hardware stores. Our setup cost $50 to make and grows about 12 huge vining tomatoes.

Every 1’ (0.3m) or so, snap a tomato clip (which you can find at most nurseries) to the string and around your tomato’s main stem. As the tomato grows, you may want to also prune off any side shoots that grow out, but this is optional.
