Camille Saint-Saëns (1835-1921) lived a long life, and experienced a wide range of reaction to his music, from admiration to rejection of his works and exaspiration of his old age. The work that made him famous (Le Carnaval des Animaux) which was never played publicly in his life. At 7 he was taught piano and theory; but he had already begun to compose. He gave his first concert, playing the piano in a violin sonata. A recital when 11 preceded his induction into the Conservatoire.
