A nostalgic look back at the Northwest Airlines livery

As a visual designer, one of the things I liked best about the Northwest livery (all versions) was the signature red tail. It was certainly the brightest color choice among the US majors, which made it easy to spot and identify Northwest aircraft at any busy airport. I also liked their final logo (which you can see at the bottom of this post) – which consisted of a simple ring with an arrow pointing to the Northwest. Simple. Clean. Good. Western Airlines route map from from August 1982. The red routes originate from its Salt Lake City hub - added only that May - and the blue routes from other cities. It restructured its route system around SLC when it created the hub, downsizing focus cities in Denver, Minneapolis/St. Paul and San Francisco at the time its 1982 annual report shows. The carrier would merge with Delta Air Lines, giving the Atlanta-based airline its SLC and LAX hubs, in 1987. Western operated 70 aircraft…
