Developed by the United States Air Force, the Lockheed SR-71 ‘Blackbird’ is a long-range, Mach 3+ strategic reconnaissance aircraft. It was designed with basic stealth characteristics and therefore served as a precursor to future stealth aircraft. Its first recorded flight took place on the 22nd December 1964 and it was retired in 1988.
