Leopold Schmutzler (1864-1940)⏭ was a Bohemian-born German painter⏩, specialized in portraits, figures and Rococo-style genre scenes. His style was generally realistic with Art-Deco⏩ elements.

Painted in 1817, this highly important sketch is an early preparatory study for The White Horse, the first of Constable's famous ‘Six-Footers’, which he exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1819.
