In 1946 Colonel John Lutley [a Boer War veteran] died and left the 1680 acre [2.6 square miles, 6.8 square kilometres] Brockhampton Estate to the National Trust. Like most of the moated manor house estates I have written about, the Brockhampton estate was established by a Norman family, the Brockhamptons, after the Conquest of 1066.
