A guide to the historic village Shirakawa-go in Japan, and its over 100 unique gossho-zukuri houses which are over 250 years old.

Welcome to San'in! This is Matsue, Shimane. Miho Shrine is a quiet little collection of traditional buildings quite literally across the street from a small bay on the Sea of Japan. Nestled at the center of a fishing village, it's no surprise that this shrine is dedicated to the god Ebisu, a jolly god known to carry a fishing rod and grant luck to Japan's fishermen. Perpendicular to the shrine is Aoishi-datami Road, a traditional little alley that looks like a scene from a historical film.

What looks like an old and abandoned Japanese village is actually just a movie set. Many of the latest Japanese Samurai movies where filmed here. There are reconstructions of a farming village, a fishing village and a post town of the Edo period (1603–1867).
