It refers to the brightness or dullness of a colour and is considered one of the most important characteristics of colour — along with hue and value. (We use these three characteristics to mix a colour we see). The three primary colours (red, yellow, and blue) are considered to be the most pure in intensity, which is why I used them to demonstrate my method for dulling down a colour. 🔴🟡🔵 I always keep a mixture of the three primary colours on my palette. It gives me a nice neutral tone, which I can then add to any colour to dull it down. That’s it!
