Here are a few hip lift variations I like for building strong glutes. The hip lift is such a great drill because we can load the glutes and hamstrings without any axial loading of the spine. Often times, these drills can be a great way to build strength for athletes who have a history of back injuries in that are irritated by deadlifting, squats, etc.

That said, I typically use hip lift variations as accessories to dealifts and squat patterns with athletes that I work with.

1) 1-leg hip loft + medball shimmy
2) hip lift hold + medball shimmy
3) barbell hip lift
4) 1-leg DB hip lift
5) 1-leg hip lift 
6) 2-leg hip lift
