Harbor lights

The original Edgartown Lighthouse was built in 1828, on a small man-made island in the Edgartown harbor. An Act of Congress allocated money to build it 1/4 mile from shore. Later, $5,500 was appropriated to complete the project and Seth Vincent was paid $80 for a right of way to the tower. For the first year, the only way to get to the light was by boat, but another $2,500 was allocated to build a foot bridge. Duluth Harbor North Breakwater Light - Duluth, Minnesota

The old Fairport Harbor, Ohio Lighthouse was built in 1871 and operated until a new lighthouse was built on the west breakwater further out on Lake Erie in 1925. The keeper's house is now a maritime museum, and is possibly haunted by a ghost cat (as seen on the Travel Channel's Haunted Lighthouses). It's worth the trip, and the climb up the stairs to the top of the tower.

The Portsmouth Harbor Lighthouse goes by many names: Fort Point Light, Newcastle Light, and Fort Constitution Light. This is NH's only mainland lighthouse.
