Historians believe hammocks first arrived in the Yucatan from the Caribbean islands, only two hundred years before the arrival of the Conquistadors. Typically fashioned from bark or sisal, hammocks could also be crafted from palm fronds. Today Yucatan hammocks are made in the villages surrounding Merida (the same area as Hacienda Petac), and are sold throughout the world. Typical modern hammocks are constructed of cotton, made on a loom, and hand woven by men, women, and children.
