The top of Gold Hill, Shaftesbury, Dorset, It is well known for the Hovis “Boy on a Bike” advert, with views over Thomas Hardy’s Blackmore Vale. The vale, in particular the village of Marnhull ("Marlott"), is the opening backdrop for Thomas Hardy's Tess of the D'Urbervilles. Thomas Hardy was fascinated by Shaftesbury, calling it ‘the city of dream’ because of its history and ‘one of the queerest and quaintest spots in England … breezy and whimsical’.
