Frilled Shark — In 2007, a fisherman near Tokyo, Japan, told Awashiwa Marine Park officials that he'd just seen a very unusual eel-like creature with needle-sharp teeth. Staff at the park followed the fisherman, who directed them to the 5-foot-long oddity. They caught the creature, which was later identified as a frilled shark. FRILLED SHARK (Chlamydoselachus anguineus): This living fossil is thought to be the source of the mythological sea serpent. Highly specialized for deep sea, w/a reduced, poorly calcified skeleton, eel-like body, & dorsal, & pelvic fins in back. Extremely flexible jaws allow it to swallow whole prey over ½ its size, & its gestation period is 3 years. A wide but patchy distribution in the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, it's seldom observed alive, & considered a near threatened species.

Strange, scary and sharp of tooth, sharks are the oceans' most efficient predators. They're much more than "mindless killing machines", however, as these ten bizarre sharks so graphically illustrate.
