FRILLED SHARK (Chlamydoselachus anguineus): This living fossil is thought to be the source of the mythological sea serpent. Highly specialized for deep sea, w/a reduced, poorly calcified skeleton, eel-like body, & dorsal, & pelvic fins in back. Extremely flexible jaws allow it to swallow whole prey over ½ its size, & its gestation period is 3 years. A wide but patchy distribution in the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, it's seldom observed alive, & considered a near threatened species.
