As the tide falls and exposes a multitude of mollusks along the wet cliffsides the sillculus slithers in. This coastal centipede-like arthropod uses its membrane skirt it grips tightly the slippery stones and vertical spaces that edge the tidal line. With mandibles nearly a third of its length it pinches and pries the mussels and clams off their perches, shaking its head side to side it dislodged or slices through the prey's strong byssal threads.
