Eleven descendants of suffragists remind us that it wasn’t so long ago that women couldn’t vote for president, much less run for it.

The Seneca Falls Convention in Seneca Falls, New York, in July 1948, was the first women’s rights convention at which Elizabeth Cady Stanton read the Declaration of Sentiments modelled on the United States Declaration of Independence that “all men and women are created equal” with the right to vote.

Called the “founding genius” of the women's rights movement. She convened the 1848 Seneca Falls Convention, declaring, "We hold these truths to be self-evident that all men and women are created equal," inspiring a generation of suffragists.

Brash, uncompromising and fiercely intelligent, Elizabeth Cady Stanton spent more than 50 years as one of the leading voices of the American women’s rights movement.
