Cherry trees

There are many types of cherry trees - some are mainly grown for ornamental purposes like the famous Yoshino Cherry Trees, and the Weeping Cherry Trees while some produce great fruits like the Sweet Cherry Trees.

Ornamental cherry trees flower but do not produce cherries. in the early spring, the buds on the tree bloom and fill nearly the entire tree with flower blossoms that range in color from white to pink depending on the cultivar. The blooms appear before the foliage. Once the blooming season is finished, the leaves will appear.

Sweet cherry trees grow about 1 foot each year in good conditions. Young trees purchased at the garden center typically take 3-4 years to start producing fruit. These trees were typically grafted onto 1-2 year-old rootstocks in the nursery, meaning the trees are more like 5 years old when they start fruiting. Cherry trees take about 7-8 years after planting to reach maturity (for a total age of 8-10 years old).

The Regina cherry tree has become a popular variety in the United States thanks to its resistance to cracking and ability to bloom through spring frosts.
