A piece of clay used to test how a glaze or clay will look after it's fired. Test tiles can take many forms. Tile-shaped samples are easy to display and stack, but may not show how a glaze will act on the inside of a bowl, for example. Test pieces formed more like the ware the glaze will be used on give more information, but may be impractical to do for every glaze test.
