The houses in this area are sometimes painted in bright colors, as they are inside. The houses are made of mud, and to protect it from the rains, people put all along the walls some stones to let the water run out. The men and women have separate places to live inside. Animals are also kept inside. The huge walls are the best way to keep the cool temperature in summer time. At the top, there is a terrace. Rijal Almaa is a traditional, centuries old village of multistorey, stone fortress houses. One of the houses has been beautifully restored and converted in the Almaa Museum. The five-storey façade spread across five conjoined buildings is extraordinary with its austere stone and clay offset by white-washed window frames. The interior's 19 rooms are crowded with almost 2000 exhibits, including household items, costumes, weaponry, jewellery and sacred texts, all from the local area.
