This is a very simple sorting activity where students are given expressions and the sentence to describe them and have to match them up. This is meant to be an activity that is relatively quick. There are four sorts that are all very similar to each other so you may wish to break students up into groups and assigning different sorts to each group. Each sort is self checking and will indicate to the student if they have been sorted correctly For a the more traditional "hands on" version click…

Don't assume your algebra students can do the four things that I feel are the key to understanding algebraic expressions. These skills are needed to be able to solve equations and inequalities, so I believe in taking the time to cover this math building block at the beginning of the year. Click to read futher to see what is important in an algebraic expression lesson for your algebra class. Take care of these things at the beginning so your students are ready to move forward. I'm piggybacking here off of a post from Sarah Carter. I loved the question stack cards Sarah created for her students to practice evaluating expressions. However, my eighth graders hadn't reviewed operations with integers yet, so I wanted a more basic set of cards that didn't include negative numbers so that I could check that my students had the process down for substitution and following the order of operations to evaluate. Sarah does a great job explaining how the question stack works…
