Yasuke was an African man who became the first known foreign-born samurai in feudal Japan in the 16th century. He arrived in Japan in 1579, accompanying the Italian Jesuit missionary Alessandro Valignano. It is believed Yasuke was from Mozambique, Ethiopia, or Nigeria and may have been enslaved as a child before gaining his freedom.
