The three-toed box turtle (Terrapene carolina triunguis), left; the ornate box turtle (Terrapene ornata ornata) on the right. The three-toed is found statewide. Juveniles may have more pronounced markings (underside is plain). The ornate is rare & primarily in the western part of the state, but distribution is spotty & mostly limited to areas of natural prairie habitat; they are protected & should not be disturbed. HerpsOfArkansas is a great resource site for native amphibians & reptiles.
