No one likes to feel pain. And many go to great lengths to avoid it. But avoiding pain doesn’t make it go away. The longer you put off dealing with difficult emotions the worse they can be when you finally have to face them. And you will have to face them – that’s a certainty. So the best option is to face unpleasant feelings head on and deal with the pain as it comes. Often the anticipated level of pain doesn't come close to matching the reality.

Okay, I’m sure we’ve all had experiences like this with technology, but what about conversations like this with another person – perhaps your partner? There certainly are times when it can feel like we're speaking different languages. We all need to remember that sometimes when what we say is not what they hear. Taking a little extra time to clarify, or have them repeat it back to you, can be a wise move. Otherwise you may find yourself being referred to as “not eggs” or even worse.

Failure can fall into two categories. There's failure to try, which is often really fear. And there's trying and failing. If you fail to try you have chosen to limit yourself and allow fear, procrastination or something else control you. If you try and then fail you've given yourself the opportunity to learn and grow. Consider the student faced with a difficult math test. They can choose not to do it and will fail, or they can choose to try and do the best they can.

We encounter stressful situations daily, there's no avoiding them. Some come without warning and others we know about in advance. Often the worst part is the anticipation. By the time whatever we're dreading comes, we'll typically have built it into something far worse than it is and caused ourselves added stress and anxiety. If you know you have something upcoming that causes you stress, take a moment beforehand to mentally prepare yourself to handle it.
