Carl Gustav Carus

Carl Gustav Carus (1789-1869) was a German painter during the Romantic era. He was also a physiologist and even worked as the personal physician of the King of Saxony, Frederick Augustus II, during his informal tour of Britain in 1844. He was a friend of writer Johann Wolfgang von Goethe and taught himself oil painting working under Casper David Freidrich.
