Strategic elements such as fences, framed views, and walled gardens can make constrained lot sizes feel both spacious and private. This Design/Build department lays out the design possibilities for window seats, including options for setting the depth and height of the seat, placement of the seat in a stair landing, and design of the enclosure or open area below the seat - Fine Homebuilding #DIY
Designed well, windows balance the architecture of a house by maintaining a unified composition. Typically, there will be three layers in this composition: the primary windows in the main rooms of the first floor; the secondary windows, mostly in bedrooms on the second floor; and the tertiary windows in bathrooms and in the kitchen - Fine Homebuilding #DesignBuild

Timber Frame Makeover - Amazing views awaited this makeover! The original design had conventional height windows which cut off many of the views to the mountains. All new windows were put in along with a scissor truss and dormer. The original horizontal beams of the timber frame were of the typical style for this traditional construction method, but the new diagonal beams create a higher, perceived ceiling. Structural posts were also added in for balance. - Fine Homebuilding

Boscobel, an important historic house in Garrison, New York, is an outstanding example of the Federal or Adam Style of American architecture. Originally built in the early 1800s by States Dyckman, it exhibits many of the characteristics of the Federal style. - Fine Homebuilding
I came across this exceptional double gabled house in North Jay, Maine, several years back. The fact that it was abandoned added gravitas and mystery to its pale, austere beauty. I’m guessing that it was built in the mid- to late-1800s, but there was no way to confirm this. The symmetry of fenestration, the lofty height of the gables, and its lack of ornamentation was so appropriate and balanced that I consider this house to be one of my all time favorites. - Fine Homebuilding
