Experimenting with Color: Make a Scrappy Scarf
I absolutely LOVE making things from scraps of yarn. I get so excited about combining colors together, and it’s such a thrill to make “something out of nothing.” I’ve made many scrappy projects over the years. Sometimes I design a project specifically with scraps in mind such as the Merry and Bright Scarf, or the Bonita Project Bag. Other times, I design something, and then I like to re-make it using scraps, such as the Fall Harvest Cowl or the Bijou Headband.

Winding a Small Ball of Yarn
Sometimes you need just a small amount of yarn for your project; you might be making a toy and you need a little accent color for a small detail, or maybe you need just enough yarn for one stripe, or a few small balls for colorwork. In this video, Jen Lucas demonstrates how to wind a small center-pull ball of yarn by hand in two different sizes.

Tips for Using Thrifted Yarn
One of the best ways to be kind to the environment is to repurpose the materials we already have instead of purchasing new ones. As crocheters, we are able to do this in many ways: frogging old projects and using the yarn in a new project, using up yarn scraps, creating our own “yarn” out of things that would end up in a landfill such as fabric scraps, old T-shirts, or plarn (“yarn” made from plastic bags).

Making An Invisible Join at The End of The Round
Working single crochet in the round without joins makes a lovely seamless fabric. But when you fasten off after working in the round, there is a small jog, or bump where the last stitch was made. This isn’t really a problem, but it does catch your eye, and it would be nice to finish off the project in a completely smooth and seamless way.

When beginning a new crochet project, it’s important to understand the difference between US and UK crochet terminology to be sure you’re working the correct stitches for your pattern. US crochet terminology is largely used in crochet patterns in North America, but for the rest of the world, UK crochet terminology is commonly used. Working Evenly Into Your Row Ends
One of the great features of crochet, is the ability to easily switch directions, and start working across the row ends. Sometimes our pattern directions will tell us to “work evenly into the row-ends” or sometimes we just want to create a border around a piece that we crocheted, in order to make the edges look more polished. But how do we know where to place the stitches? And how many stitches do we add?
