Sean Pessarra on Instagram: "I had a lot of perennial greenery and cut flower plants (eucalyptus, lavender, etc.) that needed a home but could not overwinter outdoors. So, containers were a good option. However, I didn’t want to spend a lot of money on grow bags. This is my solution.

I simply cut drainage holes in the polybags and will use them as grow bags. This is container/hydroponic growing (without mineral soil), and these plants will need additional nutrients throughout the season to thrive, which I will apply through fertigation (liquid fertilizer in the drip line).

In the winter, I will cut the plants back to the main stems and move them into the greenhouse. I will start getting production much earlier in the season and then move them outdoors as it begins to warm up. I may move Flowering Plants, Perennial Greenery, Cucumber Trellis, Eucalyptus Lavender, Succession Planting, Hydroponic Growing, Flower Plants, Grow Bags, The Greenhouse

Pine House Edible Gardens on Instagram: "Our table pruning trellising project is in progress and looking pretty fantastic so far at our backyard garden in Berkeley! These London plane trees were planted two years ago and are just now ready to be trained into formal, flat forms around the perimeter of our client’s patio space. While the trees will provide shade, the goal is more stylistic in terms of creating some formal lines on the vertical plane. We’ve never done this before, but, with a little inspiration from some Danish garden design images we found online, the creative vision of Pine House landscape architect @hollyautumnkuljian, and some “I’ll make it work” spirit from our our amazing subcontractor, Jorge @elfeyoensenada, we’re off to a great start and pretty excited about it!!

Galena Berkompas • Urban Flower Farm • Education on Instagram: "Out of all of these, I’d say that Gay Tabor is my very favorite because each bloom looks like a beautiful rose as it opens with hints of orange peeking through the white petals! Funny enough, I used to not even be a daffodil fan… until I discovered that there are loads of fancy ones and well, now I’ve added so many I’ve lost count! I love watching them open up each spring and have big plans for a future meadow that’s dotted with fancy daffodils! Daffodils in general are deer resistant, perennials and do great if you just plant them in the ground in fall. Just plant 6 inches apart, 6 inches deep and leave them. They multiple bulbs every year so eventually you’ll have loads more then you started with! If you’ve had some in th

Portland Nursery on Instagram: "Roses are blue, violets are too…wait. That’s not how that goes. Petunias come in almost every hue, new echinacea colors appear each spring, and even Coral Bell leaves range from lime green to deep purple. Of course, we also have blue morning glories, Himalayan blue poppies, and blue cornflowers—so shouldn’t we have blue roses by now? The reason our roses aren’t following suit is that the gene which produces the blue compound, delphinidin, does not exist in our garden roses or in any of their wild relatives. Until breeders could move a “blue gene” from one plant to another, they were stymied. However, even using modern gene editing technologies did not resolve the issue. The gene was successfully transferred from a pansy and delphinidin was produced in t
