WWI Trench Art

My collection of WWI trench art. All items were bought in France. Despite the name, most trench art was not actually done in the trenches. It was done by wounded soldiers in the hospital, prisoners or even by soldiers after the end of the war. Most of the motifs are nature themed- flowers, trees, leaves and animals.

Founded in 1914, the aim of " The Wounded to Work" is to bring the benefits of work to the wounded during their hospital stay, to prepare them during their convalesence to exercise a profession in business, agriculture or industry after they are released from service. Ladies working with this association teach the wounded simple tasks right within the hospital. The necessary materials are furnished free of charge. The wounded may give the objects they create to the association and will be paid.
