Automated and connected? Smartphones and automobility through the global south
Applied Mobilities Journal
In this article, we propose a research agenda that re-thinks the future of automated and connected automobilities through the prism of the global south. Dominant English language discourses about future automobilities focus on purported benefits and dangers of the growing levels of automation and connectedness associated with the introduction of autonomous driving vehicles in the global north. We argue that in a context of global inequalities and diversity these narratives need to be redefined.…

Dominant English language discourses about future automobilities focus on purported benefits and dangers of the growing levels of automation and connectedness associated with the introduction of autonomous driving vehicles in the global north. We argue that in a context of global inequalities and diversity these narratives need to be redefined. In doing so, we draw on our research into car–smartphone configurations in Brazilian commuting experiences.

Applying user-centered techniques to analyze and design a mobile application
Springer Open
Techniques that help in understanding and designing user needs are increasingly being used in Software Engineering to improve the acceptance of applications. Among these techniques we can cite personas, scenarios and interaction models. Personas are fictitious representations of target users. Scenarios provide various types of information at different levels of abstraction. Interaction models help in design of an adequate user interaction with the system.

Design Ethnography for Screenless Interaction Style: hands-on and no-hands in early morning routines
IHC 2017
Possible digital technology futures are inevitably speculative, and tend to have present configurations as their points of reference. In this paper, we present the findings of design ethnography research which aims to create new understandings how screens are used in everyday routines, and the implications of this for the design of future screen interaction styles in everyday life contexts. We focus on the question of how hands are used in interactions with screens, why it is often impossible…
We focus on the question of how hands are used in interactions with screens, why it is often impossible for hands to be used, and how users improvise to use screens without hands. To demonstrate this, we draw on examples of ethnographic research into everyday early morning routines where people deal with diverse materials, liquids, objects and surfaces as they prepare for the day ahead. Our findings show that mobile screen technology use and experience is inextricable from morning routines and shaped by the messiness and creative improvisations these routines involve. This, we argue, has implications for future technology design.

This work seeks to build a new kind of classroom experience by rethinking how educational content is currently transmitted and consumed at schools. This work presents the results of applying the Short Bridge Method in the education context. We evaluate how this approach contributes to the class composition process by providing tools that support educators and school administrators to plan courses aligned with students’ necessities and learning pace. We present our methodology to identify the work flows and artifacts that impact the class composition activities to support educators and school administrators for personalized learning environments. The results allowed us to understand and map the teacher’s behavior during class preparation and define a set of practices to be incorporate in class composition software.

Towards a Digital Teaching Platform in Brazil: Findings from UX Experiments
Springer International Publishing
This work discusses the usability experiments conducted around a proof-of-concept implementation of a novel tablet-based Digital Teaching Platform (DTP). The platform is intended to address specific issues with tablet usage in a classroom setting, and address problems with technology adoption in education, particularly in Brazil. We evaluated the DTP in two separate studies, a Usability experiment in a laboratory setting, and an in-situ experiment in Brazilian classrooms, with the aim of…
This work discusses the usability experiments conducted around a proof-of-concept implementation of a novel tablet-based Digital Teaching Platform (DTP). The platform is intended to address specific issues with tablet usage in a classroom setting, and address problems with technology adoption in education, particularly in Brazil. We evaluated the DTP in two separate studies, a Usability experiment in a laboratory setting, and an in-situ experiment in Brazilian classrooms, with the aim of identifying specific problems with the current solution, and identifying usage patterns that better engage students in the classroom. We found that our DTP leads, overall, to a very satisfactory experience. However, any such platform aimed at classroom usage should take special care to address note-taking, and tasks related to collaboration, sharing, and general social aspects of the classroom experience.

An Ergonomical Analysis of the Information Architecture of websites: developers vs users; a case study of brazilian university's websites

Under the hypothesis that website developing is done according to the viewpoint of the programmers, and therefore the solutions encounter a deficient usability. The present work evolves a research in order to know the mental models of both the website developers and the users, regarding the Information Architecture of websites. The study outlines a panorama of the present situation of Internet use as a truly effective tool, by analyzing articles and books so far published, about issues selected as a theoretical basis. Two semi-structured surveys were made with developers and users, comparing their respective mental models. The purpose was to draw a profile of how a website is made and how its usability is considered. On the other hand, users have been questioned in order to identify their difficulties in the execution of the navigation task on university websites, and define what they usually expect of a website.Outros autores
